Apple (AAPL) is slashing production of its new iPhone X in a sign of weak demand for the $1,000 smartphone. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple plans to make 20 million phones in the first quarter instead of the 40 million it initially planned. Apple will offer its first report on iPhone X sales when it reports earnings Thursday.

It only took a $1,000 price tag, but looks like we finally found the point at which Apple consumers will push back against a mediocre product.

Apple was really banking more on "everyone loves our brand" than the X being a compelling consumer product, because there is really nothing to justify its premium price. Even taking other non-Apple brands out of it, the phone has only a marginally better camera than the 8s, has the annoying notch, and doesn't have TouchID like the 8/8s. Even for Apple fanatics, there is just no compelling reason to buy it at that price.

Sounds like the kind of thing that applies to the manufacturer instead of the OS. In Android land, there's a difference.

Mine is Android and the touch is fine. Sometimes it'll work when I don't even touch it, if I get close enough.

I tried a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 which was around $1,000 too and had to return it because the battery life was shit and the features weren't substantial enough to justify the price tag.

My $180 LG Stylo 2 that I bought a year and a half ago is still trucking along. <_< And when it dies, I'll be buying another $180 to $250 phone.

I got one of those motoX phones, not bad at all and it's responsive for me. Did it for that free promo they had last year for free projector screens. Horrible battery life with it on but so damn cool. I get my dragon Ball fix every Saturday and I always get that screen as big as it goes.

Skipping 9 for the massive flop of innovation to jump the gun on the X was a dumb move.

It's not the price tag guys so much as the battery throttling, the lackluster performance gains, the even more marginal camera gains, etc etc etc

i have a different theory: they priced it high to maintain sales rates of their lower-end products

traders are dumping the stock but i think we're going to see a surprise in their earnings. their profit margin is so gigantic that oversupply doesn't hit them the way that it does other device makers

i bought around 170 and will buy again if it hits 160

The iPhone 8 line is the more sensible purchase.

You essentially get the same internals, Touch ID, wireless charging, camera (if you spring for the 8 Plus), battery life (8 Plus), and cheaper price.

Is that really any better than the notch though? It's a lose-lose, IMO.

The X doesn't offer a true edge-to-edge display in the style of the Galaxy S8 line.

This isn't a surprise since it's being discontinued later this year. Apple is reported to be selling some more expensive OLED models this year along with a cheaper LCD version. A reduced in price IPhone X would cut into sales of the LCD model.

here's my two cents:

I wouldn't say they are necessary, but smartphones are becoming increasingly more and more central to living a modern, connected lifestyle. manufacturers acknowledge this and as a result have created a system for their products that takes advantage of consumers as much as possible.

Smartphones are designed to be quickly disposable (batteries that quickly degrade, operating systems that slow down over time or with mandatory updates, etc).

Smartphones are also designed to not be repairable, with nearly all repairs being nearly impossible for the average consumer to perform on their own. They are pretty much designed to break (i.e. iPhone X all glass construction that cost $549 if you crack the back plate).

Smartphones are also notorious for removing features in order to create new market segments, rather than providing some kind of additional value to consumers (i.e. removing headphone jacks and SD card slots).

Finally, smartphones are extremely expensive, and manufacturers and carriers are in bed together to make sure that this is a fact that is hidden from the general public as much as possible.

Most US customers do not buy unlocked, and if you go to a carrier store they will only push high end phones. The cost of these phones are also obscure; go on the Verizon site, for example, and notice that they do not list the sale price of the phone but simply the per month cost. This is all to trick people into thinking that they are not buying a $1,000 smartphone but rather just altering their monthly bill.

For savvy people that read tech blogs and shit, this is a non-issue, but when you take, say, an older person who doesn't know/care about phones and needs a new one for whatever reason, they are essentially tricked into paying very high phone bills and locking themselves into this endless cycle of buying a phone, financing it, and trading it in at the end of their finance process to start over again.

That is the most paranoid horse shit I've read in a long time. You can buy inexpensive phones in the $150 to $200 price range that are unbelievably awesome devices compared with even flagships from 5 years ago. The quality of the devices has gone up really fast, and you can easily find phones that have great replaceable batteries and lightweight operating systems. You can even flash your own image onto your device if you want.

Stop wasting your money on flagships and maybe you won't be so paranoid. Flagships are top of the line devices for people who don't care about the costs and just want the best of the best.

Removing headphone jacks...are you kidding? USB c is a superior standard by any measurement. Time to enter 2018, my friend. SD card slots are nice and a lot of phones still have them, but you can easily use cloud storage (which is superior to SD cards, tbqh) if your phone doesn't have an SD card.

Stop shitposting just because you're on the "buy a flagship every year" hamster wheel.
