Gameplay is barebones and unrewarding with shooting mechanics that feel like an early 2000s title, level design is incredibly linear and formulaic, and completely lacking in the attention to detail that makes linear game design truly shine. A borderline genocidal ethno-state is also an EXTREMELY poor setting for the "both sides are just as bad!" narrative, and the entire plot is a hamfisted slapped together mess.

I agree with you there, and I did think a huge chunk of the middle of the game was super boring.
But other than that I loved it!
When I got Infinite, I thought playing the first Bioshock that came with it would be something I'd do for maybe 10 minutes before moving on to Infinite. But I ended up being absolutely blown away by the first and it made my experience of Infinite feel a lot better, because I played it immediately after.

I liked it. I highly recommend playing on hard difficulty. Forces you to actually use your powers to get an edge while normal just feels like straight up Call of Duty because you can run forward and catch bullets with your face and still achieve victory. As for the plot? The setting was based on US history and race was a huge thing around the turn of the century (19th to 20th) in America.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nadir_of_American_race_relations

As for "same thing both sides" ....... the early 20th century was absurdly brutal. The revolution you see in infinite reminded me of the Russian Revolution. Millions died. The royal family, men women and children, along with countless other were murdered and the government that replaced the old Russian Empire was as bad or worse than the reds that won the war.

What drove me nuts was the marketing blitz behind the game when it came out. There were more than a couple news and politics podcasts/radio shows that did a feature on it and acted as if it was the first videogame with a narrative; like the future of interactive storytelling had changed. It was obvious that a lot of people who don't know shit about gaming were paid to promote this thing to the moon. And of course the game itself is nothing special.

the combat and level design are what really pissed me off. considerably linear and narrow minded in everything over 1 and 2. 2 weapon limit can suck my nuts, horribly underused sky lines, shallow upgrades to everything, semi-infinite resource provider elizabeth, poor level design that consists of a few side room and a hallway (baring that one end-ish level). the story comes off as interesting, but once you sit back and take it in it falls apart hard. its an interesting experience because of that, but a pretty mediocre game.

2 is still the best in the series.

How can Columbia influence Rapture when the whole point of infinite's ending is to stop Columbia from ever being made? How can God Elizabeth who can manipulate time and space lose to a single big daddy? Why does going into a universe make her lose her omnipotence when the luteces routinely do so? How does her sacrificing herself to save the little sisters prevent the countless other universes where the little sisters would die anyway? Why does Elizabeth even exist in the first place when all Elizabeths should've been prevented from existing? It's an absolute mess

At least Bioshock was just a linear game that you could blaze through within a couple hours. The pain was only for a few moments.

Inquisition locked story quests behind walls of doing hours of countless terrible single player MMO quests in a bland glitchy world. A knife twisting into your gut, as you pray to god it comes out soon. You finally pull it out, just to see another knife jamming into your backside 20 minutes later as you prepare for another 2 hours or twisting.

And the story? Bioshock tried to hard and failed, but at least is fucking tried. Inquisition? Evil dude being evil. Wow. Incredible.

Bioshock doesn't have the strongest game play honestly, it stands out more in Infinite than the others but 1 was innovative and new, 2 was a bit of an extension of that. So sure I suppose the game play was better, but it wasn't new and game play isn't the strong point of the series.

Yeah 2 is extremely underrated. It also had a very silly story (still better than infinite's) but it has by far the best gameplay and had a really cool protecting little sister mechanic. Also Minerva's den makes up for the poor main story
