Ever get bored playing it? Game can go on for awhile. Like 70 days.

my family always played "house rules"

all fines are collected, whoever lands on free parking wins it all
no trading at all period until every property has been purchased.
they will gang up on you until they get you to trade the properties they want.

needless to say, we never finished any games

I dont think so, my family always played some abridged version. I didnt even figure out the difference until I got older.

I always wanted to play it all the way through, but nobody else ever had the patience... even though I was the youngest child in the family :/

I played the Sega Genesis version with my older brother a lot. Basically he screwed me over during trades and ended up with hotels on boardwalk, park place etc. I was too young to know any better.

Later, I bought the Pokemon version of Monopoly. Played that one with a 90 minute time-limit. One house rule was that all money that went towards taxes, went to the free parking space.

even the free parking rule doesn't extend it that long, if people actually pay attention on their turn and play instead of messing around you could finish it in an afternoon no problem

thing is, the game is so boring no one ever focuses on it so games take extra long

risk was the one that we never finished growing up. hell sometimes we never even finished setting it up cause people would argue over how countries get decided

catan was so much simpler when I brought it one thanksgiving during college. no arguments, it got an audience cause they had never heard of it, people bought it for themselves, and it actually got fucking finished

When my family got their first home computer, the monopoly pc game would be in there for free. I learned a few things from there. Once you get a strategy against the computer you pretty much won. But I like to ramp up the difficulty on the CPU players and watch them go to town on each other.

Yes, if played correctly the game should only take like 30-45 minutes. People pointlessly elongate the game by randomly scooping up properties and refusing to trade/sell them. Also for some reason no one plays with the auctioning portion of the rules, which is really weird.

If you play by the auction rules it will end quick.
