It was a glitch, and was fixed in Yellow.

Imagine how many steps you could have wasted.

I'm sure I've walked up and down several of those longer stretches of red at some point. This makes me dislike the Safari Zone even more.

You don't waste steps if you just stand in one spot and lightly tap the pad to change directions without moving.

I never knew this either. The games were brilliant and a complete mess at the same time.

I blame these tiles for my Chansey woes.

It's interesting how they are laid out. Curious as to why some extend to the edge of a patch and most don't.

From what I can tell the columns are consistent across the entire grid, so it's likely some sort of error in procedural layout of the spawn tiles. Something like multiplying a number which causes all "odd" column numbers to be affected.

No idea on why they end on different rows, though. Maybe the map was initially populated automatically as squares and someone "painted" them into odd shapes?

Yeah I suspected. Surprised other people aren't going "yeah that makes sense" because as someone who used to play pokemon to death, I very much felt there were stretches of land in the safari zone that refused to net me any encounters.

Though It was only after I played pokemon that I learned you could stay in place and lightly tap the directional pads to trigger an encounter without wasting any steps. Pretty useful all things considered.

They used some interesting number manipulation and the like for the spawn rates so it's possible that's linked to it. After all, it's the only area where spawns change on a map by map basis. Every other area has at least two rooms with the same spawns.

Yeah, that'd explain why there were times when I'd go tons of steps with no encounters.
