I never paid attention to the feature during red and blue, or even yellow, but I've heard some people liked giving different nicknames to pokemon.

I named them after the members of Guns N' Roses.

Some of them would end up with AAAAAAAAA as a nickname because Id be to busy mashing not paying attention.

I recall I named my first Alakazam "Aureon".

In RBY, I named my Jolteon "ELECTRODE", before I found there was a pokemon named Electrode.

That was...not so fun, lol.

Once upon a time during my very first Pokemon game, I named my Pokemon after WWE wrestlers, and the rival Vince.

That was an interesting run.

I did the first time. Then I got halfway through and found I had no idea who Dave was, or Mike or Jim for that matter. Especially annoying since Someone's PC just says their name and not their species. There is a little icon but thst icon only narrows it down to maybe 30 species, and only then if you remember which species go with which icon.

About halfway through that playthrough I stsrted nicknaming them some variation on their species name, much to the dismay of Exlax the Snorlax.

This is how all my first time playthroughs went.

Any subsequent playthrough, I'd mess around a little with the names of my pokemon and the characters.

For the first few gens, their nicknames were just their normal names but not in all-caps. After they started doing that by default, I didn't give anymore nicknames.

The exception was Roggenrola, which I always named Ayatollah

Only my very first, when I didn't understand how it would be easier just to keep their real names.

My brother and I both got Charizard. He decided to call his Fireman. I wanted to copy him, but couldn't think of anything better than Mr Fire. XD
