It just leads to a vicious cycle of a character being underleveled, leading to them being knocked out, meaning they miss out on experience, making them underleveled, and so on.

they should at least get experience for the portion of the battle they were alive. Stupid when someone that dies right before the final hit gets zero experience.

Assuming that's how all experience is rationalized, that means the only time a character learns is the moment when the last enemy is killed. Shitty way to learn.
