Basically we work together and it feels weird being referred to as the short version. I won't use real name but let's say my name is Michael. People who know me and him call me Mike. They call the other Michael the full version. I have never went by the short version and my name isn't as common as Michael.

There are also situations where people who I haven't met at work will say "hey do you know where I could find Michael" and I say i'm here or that's me. And it leads to awkward situation where they realize they didn't know my name or that two people have same name and go "oh...I mean the other one."

We have that situation at my job with people named Mike. We originally referred to them by what department they worked in like Sales Mike or CS Mike.

Now most of them no longer work in that same department but the name stuck. So CS Mike works in the accounting department. It's very confusing to new people.

We work in the same department. We haven't really talked much but he refers to me by my last name.
