Like, taking a picture of it, uploading the dimensions, so that other people can just trace over regular cardboard and make their own?

you still have to buy the software
but like, I think nintendo is expecting it. in fact, once people start doing some homebrew-y contraptions and share them online, it becomes free press for them

Yes, but the people who just get the directions online won't have the software to actually use it.

Plus there's more than just cardboard, there's string, eyelets, reflective tape, and some other stuff.

Full grown men are already complaining about how difficult it will be to build these things. Getting them to print off these low effort schematics on actual cardboard would be pretty hard.
