I don't get it, the word is an awful word and just shouldn't be used in general. But I cannot think of ONE reason that a white person would use that word unless they were intentionally trying to be antagonistic.

I don't care how I look to people who dog whistle racially pregnant ideas to start shit. There can't even be the presumption of intellectual honesty when that's how you start a conversation, only argument.

And on topic, you're still on this 'looking' thing, again. Unwilling to set aside your perspective as observer, to answer why any one should feel comfortable telling black people how to act, in a historical in context in which white people have been telling black people how to act for centuries. Why should black people care how you look at them? What does your gaze have to do with how they live their day to day lives? What is the authority behind your proffered advice? And if there is none, what can we do to convince you to keep these opinions to yourself in the future?

again, like I said, I'm white, and I've never even once used that word for any of my black friends. They have names, why would i have to define them by their skin colour...? I don't want them coming up to me saying "yo white person" so why would I do it to them?

In theory I think that's a fair position to take. But do you volunteer your judgement of people who do those other things, to those people the way TC does in the OP? And if they then look at you and tell you why they choose to behave that way, can you accept that and agree to disagree?

I don't use this word myself. It doesn't sound natural on my tongue and my folks have complicated feelings about its use stemming from the Civil rights era that have been largely passed down to me. My bougieness is not an affectation. That said, I understand many of the justifications for those of us who do still use it, and I defend their use of it as a dog whistle for black solidarity and a slice of humble pie for those of us who get uppity. I'm also highly critical of outside opinions weighing in on this conversation because they don't have the right.

The legacy of racism is keeping the legacy of racism alive, not black people using the n-word to refer to each other. That's what makes the arguments in this topic so ridiculous. If you feel a black cultural practice makes black people ignorant, regardless of context, that's a personal hangup that you have as an individual. I'm not sure why black people should care about your preconceptions on this particular subject. You could choose to stop caring about something that doesn't affect you. You could choose to understand the history of the word. You could choose to update your definition of equality to something more meaningful. You should do all of those things before attempting to telling groups of people what they are thinking, what to think, or what to say.

If a topic were made about it, I would hold the same judgement and state the same argument yes. I don't walk around in public stating things that could piss people off simply because it's not a wise thing to do.

But in a controlled environment for anyone of these subjects where debate was encouraged and people weren't just going to plug their ears and not listen to what is being said by others, I would state the same reasoning.

If someone says fuck you, your white and you simply don't get it. I probably wouldn't be prone to "agree to disagree." On the other hand if someone simply stated their reasons that I didn't agree with in a respectful manner, I would have no problem with that.
