He was so checked out from MGS by MGS 4, and it was made even more apparent with MGS V where it had the barest, loosest connection with the series.

For all the shit I give Kojima, you can tell he felt restricted by having to try and make his ideas work in the MGS universe.

On top of that, he's stated he always wanted other creators to take over MGS dating back to MGS2.

He wanted to make MGS2, he was persuaded into doing MGS3 because he wanted to do a Cold War story I think.

MGS4 he did because of death threats supposedly.

After that I think he was just kind of forced into keep making MGS games. That's kind of why Peace Walker and MGS V are so out there story wise because he was trying to do things he wanted to do while still keeping it in the MGS universe.
