it's a bit harder to go back with civs imo.

as such you should start with 4 and move on to 5 and eventually 6 sometime down the line.

since im old ive played:

civ 1 , freeciv, civ3, calltopower, civ4, alpha centuri. (havent played beyond earth is it good)?

start with 5. huge workshop and tons of fun. 6 changes some things in small ways and may make it difficult going from 6 to 5 but going 5 to 6 if you love 5 is simple.

6 isn't fully fleshed out yet. 5 is.

Civ 4 has the best AI out of all of them. In civ 5 you can kill off whole AI armies with 1 artillery on a hill. In Civ 6 is not much better I hear. Civ 3 is inferior to Civ4 but has a certain charm in its graphics.

I still say Civ 6 as 5 has some critical, systemic flaws despite how many people claim it's "developed". Expansion is out sometime soon.

V is cheaper, though.

It is basically 5 but you can make cities that can move on water tiles for some reason.

It is good though, but not necessary.

I always have a lot of fun but get burnt out, distracted, or something, before I can finish a game. I came really close this last time, but it was modded and I couldn't find an answer to an important question about it.

V is the best in the series. Easily.

VI is too city planning focused but still enjoyable. It's $12 (included in the monthly humble bundle right now), and definitely worth that.

Play 5, a nearly perfect game honestly, and then play 6 when you're bored. IMO 6 is better than 5 after you get used to it.

I love 6, but 4 (with expansions) is the high point of the series by far. 5 is garbage, don't waste your time.
