Some random old guy asked "Can I help you?" to my friends. Old people are weird as hell.

They ask people that to determine shoplifting, it's basically a way of letting you know they're watching you.

Retail workers have to ask that. I doubt they care.

when I did retail, we only asked if people looked confused

that's fine, if I look like I don't know where I'm going then I don't care, but when I'm looking at a product I don't need to hear a "Can I help you?"

It's annoying, and has no place and I don't think most retail managers are insistent that you ask literally everybody in the store.

It'd be like going to a buffet, and as you're making your plate a waiter or cleaner asks if you need help

Certain stores definitely stress making contact with literally every customer you come across. Partly to get them to buy stuff, partly as said to deter shoplifting.

When I was in retail, I'd say something more engaging than "Can I help you?"

I'd take note of what they were looking at, and asked what they were looking for in that kind of product, and then recommend them one.

But maybe because it's the holidays it just seems extra annoying to me. I didn't plan on just walking out of Gamestop but I wanted to see their new funkos and consider adding to my collection when I just get interrupted by the already overbearing Gamestop franchise(I 100% acknowledge it is not the employees fault, but the companies), so I pick up my half off Persona 5 copy that I reserved, they try to sell me disc protection not once, but twice, didn't ask for my power up rewards(honestly the points I'd gain from the transaction are so minuscule that I forgot about it until now) and then said it was their last copy and opened then offered to seal it or something, and not 10 seconds later said they're out of it.

I mean, it's still better than them trying to get me to preorder games that don't even have release dates like they used to
