So yesterday started what is called "The 7 Deadly Days" here in Thailand. This is twice per year (New Years and Thai New Year).

Between 400-700 people will be killed over the next few days and tens of thousands seriously injured. The majority of the accidents will be caused by drunk driving.

I've seen brain matter on the road here 2 out of the last 4 years during New Years, don't really want to see it again. Other than early in the day, I don't plan on driving anywhere for the next few days especially with the motorcycle.

Day 1 stats: 477 accidents, 41 dead, over 500 injured.

The thing is, the numbers lie. The death count is actually much higher than that. Thailand only reports a death as a motor vehicle death of the person died at the scene. If they are alive and then die in hospital it doesn't count as a road fatality for some fucked up reason.

There is but it's still not enough. If you avoid the checkpoints then you don't have to worry about cops because they never pull drivers over. And even then there isn't enough checkpoints anyways.

Also, drunk driving simply isn't punished harshly enough. Get caught drunk driving? Spend the night in jail, pay $200 fine the next morning and then they give you back your keys and you can drive away. It's fucking joke.
