if you take time to make your presence known and wait for the burglar to identify himself, youre giving the bad guy time to take his own gun out

And if you sneak up on someone and execute them you are a murderer

i'd rather be a murderer than have my truck stolen

do you think the dad would have said the same thing?

Why did this immediately turn into a circlejerk about gun politics? The father is obviously an irresponsible person and shouldn't own guns. That doesn't mean I or any of you should be barred from purchasing them as well. There just needs to be more stringent background checks and safety training to weed out people like this.

No amount of checks would have prevented this. It was a regular guy who lived life straight until just now.

@Philoktetes

I am all for self defense but if you think executing a person when you could solve the problem without doing so is a good idea you need to seek help for mental issues.

Ever hear of target identification ?, if you can sneak up on the person ever think they might just run in fear when they learn your armed ?

If the thief is armed you will have a much better defense if you give them a chance to leave peacefully before they get their weapon out vs sneak up and murder them.

Don't steal if you don't want people to shoot you. Simple.

Not that it applies to the son itt, but in general, thieves don't deserve a heads up.

That attitude has led to this topic, genius.

@yemmy

A laser/light combo does save lives as well as legal fees, all my handguns have a laser/light combo for target identification at night or low light conditions.

There is no reason to shoot at shadows or not be sure of the target, a light or laser/light combo is very affordable.

people should learn to get a streamlight or a surfire and identify targets before shooting people in the middle of the night.

ANYONE that is versed in home defense has a weapon light, and a plan to use that weapon light when an intruder might enter.
