The proper term is "little person".

Little People of America, the worlds oldest and largest dwarfism support organization and an international, membership-based organization for people with dwarfism and their families, advocates to abolish the use of the word midget. The word midget was never coined as the official term to identify people with dwarfism, but was created as a label used to refer to people of short stature who were on public display for curiosity and sport. Today, the word midget is considered a derogatory slur. The dwarfism community has voiced that they prefer to be referred to as dwarfs, little people, people of short stature or having dwarfism, or simply, and most preferably, by their given name.

The word has been used over time to refer to a person on display and a spectacle. It has come to be used as a derogatory term to label and demean a population of people who are simply small.

To a person with dwarfism, the word midget can be as painful as someone using the R-word to describe a person with an intellectual disability. These words are derogatory because they label a group of individuals by their differences, typically in a negative light.

I am not my label. Im a person who was born with achondroplasia. To call me a midget puts a label on me that denigrates my individual nature.

Its always appropriate to describe me as a person who has dwarfism or someone who has achondroplasia. Two words, which are oftentimes associated with my condition, are dwarf or little person. I dont mind being described as a little person. Its especially helpful for children because it helps them better understand that we are just smaller people.

Ok so it's really not my place to say so I accept whatever the little person community has decided is the correct term, but I still think "little person" sounds patronising as fuck.

Like "No no you can't call him a dwarf or a midget. He's a little person. To my ears that sounds like you're talking about a child or something.

Fine, say "person with dwarfism". The term midget originates from circus freakshows and has very negative connotations.

My brother's best friend from like 5th-10th grade had a sister, Erin, who I called the Flaky Little Midget. She graduated around 4'10? At best 5'. In like 6th grade one thing lead to another and I ended up putting wood glue in her hair. Which caused flaky scalp. Hence flaky little midget.

I have to wonder how the logic works for people who don't understand their words are hurtful to other people.

"I don't personally have a problem with it (even though there's no reason why I should because I'm not the target of that word), so even if it injures other people, why should I change my behaviour at all?

Pretty narcissistic to stubbornly refuse to change the most simple of behaviour even when presented with fact, reasoned argument and heartfelt pleads for why you should.

I think part of the problem is the rhetoric these days has diluted the word "offensive" so much that it comes across more like part of a game you have to win, like there's nothing actually meaningful at stake. Oh, a liberal was offended? 20 points!

I prefer injury. When you use racial slurs for example, you're actually injuring a people and contributing to the environment and factors that have systematically injured those people for a long time. I think most people could understand that even if they also think that "libruls are just offended at everything".

so i can kind of answer this based on how i used to think. i was super anti-pc and my dad still is. I loved rush limbaugh at 14.

my dad is 6'2", former concrete layer and built like a brick shithouse, like he could military press ~300 pounds at 50. im 6'6" and a former athlete still in good shape. So basically nothing someone can call you can offend you. So you assume other people are just being sensitive little bitches if they get offended by a name, not really understanding if someone treats you subhuman for years that shit can wear on you. Like someone talks shit to me, its just whatevs, I know they are just a small little t*** (can you believe that is totally censored?! so anti-british) and who gives a fuck about their opinion? I think that is often where it comes from.
