Anyone else kinda feel this way? It used to be easy and fun to go to the movies, but now with reserved seating and online ticketing, you have to plan out days in advance to go, instead of just going from the spur of the moment.
Add that to the fact that it's crazy expensive now and the food is outrageous. I could make food at home and put up something on streaming and have just a good a time as at the theater, minus the hassle of dealing with a rude audience or dirty theater.
Plus movies come out so quickly now on home video, what's the added incentive of you go the theater now?
I don't know, just over the past year or so I've been realizing that I much prefer to watch movies at home. Then I read articles about how the box office is drastically down and the studios are struggling, maybe most people are getting the same idea.

I like going to the movies, but I absolutely hate the average movie goer of today because they always seem to feel the need to give their fucking commentary during the movie like it's god damn Rocky Horror or an episode of Mystery Science Theater.

People have been making this argument for decades (since the advent of home video) and yet people still go to the theater to see movies.

Turns out people just want to get the fuck out of the house and enjoy the movie on a giant screen.

When movies at home were a VHS from Blockbuster being played on a 19 inch CRT, the movie theater made a lot of sense. When movies at home are on a 75 inch 4k with surround sound, the draw of the movie theater isn't as big.

if anything, i think they should try to make the movie going experience more akin to IMAX or those XD or luxary seating things.

This
I remember a couple of sets from early 90s comedians doing this same bit. Fucking Hudson from Gargoyles had a similar rant.

This too! Home video has gotten so much better now. Plus the last several time I've been to the movies I noticed the screen and sound quality wasn't as good as it could've been, then I discover movie theaters and dimming their projector bulbs to save momey. ..

I like the atmosphere of a movie theater. I dont have a super crazy 75in 4K TV. I dont know if I even will.

So I like being able to go to the movies and see it on a big screen with good sound.

Also popcorn! Even though it costs a fuck ton.

Not sure what expensive ass places people live at on here. It only costs like 30 at most for two people where I live and you can usually get your tickets right when the movie is starting just fine.

Tickets average like 10 dollars lol. Every week there's like atom tickets or fandango promotions for free or b1g1 tickets

Yep. Moviegoers RUIN the cinematic experience for me, every single time.

Talking during the movie? Fuck you. Don't say wow, don't quote what just happened, don't talk to your friends. Literally nobody came here to hear you, not even your friends. Shut the fuck up.

Phone rings during the movie? Fuck you. There were thirty billion screens before the movie telling your ho ass to shut it off. Fuck off.

Brought your baby? Fuck. You. Of course it's going to cry, and you knew damn well what you were doing but you made the choice to come anyway because you're a selfish piece of shit. Fuck you.

Weak parents with out of control kids? Go to hell, fuck you. "Anthony, stop. Anthony. Anthony, please stop. If you don't stop we're going to leave. Anthony. Anthony, I'm serious. Anthony, we're going to leave." Do you leave? No. Does Anthony stop? No. Are you just as annoying as Anthony? Yes. Anthony runs your life, you sad sack of crap. You and your whole family don't deserve Christmas this year, fuck you.

Snoring? Fuck you, go sleep in your car, loser.

Making out/sex? Double fuck you, both because you're being a nuisance and because my virgin ass is jealous.

Sitting next to other people in a mostly empty theater? Well, as long as you're quiet, it's fine I guess, but what the fuck... over 100 seats and you need to be near me in any way? Nah, son... Nah.

Last, but not least, custodians/security. Fuck you guys. Why do I have to pay for movie tickets? This is bullshit. You're ruining the cinema experience when you come in and make a big scene, telling me to put on pants and go home before you call the cops. Well, joke's on you, I actually live in the theater, in that one concession stand you guys don't use anymore, and I NEVER wear pants back there. Tough luck.

So yeah, just saying, movie courtesy was either never a thing or is long dead, and I just don't get it. Why do people think this type of behavior in theaters is okay? It's partly on the movie theater too. They need to actively remove nuisances. Don't allow babies in in the first place. If kids can't behave, kick 'em out. If adults can't behave, kick 'em out. This ain't rocket science. You make one customer mad to the benefit of 100, they're gonna have a better experience and you'll get slightly more business in the long run.

As much as reserved seating can be a pain, in reality nothing has gotten worse on the seating front. I do prefer not having to get to the theater an hour early to line up to then dash into the screening room and have to fight people out for seats.

Even with getting there early there were plenty of times I didnt get my ideal seats anyway. The only downside of reserved seating is youre not gonna get great seats if you decide to spontaneously go to a major release on opening night. Which is fair to people who reserved tix imo anyway

Hopefully soon movies skip theatres and release on streaming devices. You can stream once and be done. Cut out the middleman theatres too and it'll can be cheaper. Only issue I see is there's no security guards stopping people from sneaking into the room to watch the movie

It's just as bad if not worse in the "rich areas".

In fact, I'd say I have far worse experiences with fat, middle aged white dudes than anyone else in theaters.

He's right, you know. Rich people are the least self-centered types, and are extremely considerate of others even at the expense of their own sense of satisfaction. They would never thoughtlessly ruin someone else's experience for the sake of being able to act and live as they feel they are entitled to.

The fuck? What is this, opposite day? Backwards land?

It used to be awful and terrible going to the movies, specifically because there was no reserved seating and online ticketing. You'd have to wait in a huge line, and you'd have to get there extra early if you wanted a good seat.

It's actually kind of amazing now. It's easier to get tickets, and you can show up right when the movie is starting because your seat is there waiting for you.

I think going to the movies is more viable than ever these days, for literally the exact reasons that you think it's outdated. Bizarre.

Also recliners with plenty of space.

I dunno

I end up going to matinees these days cause it only costs like 6 bucks. I still gotta deal with shit heads depending on what the movie is, but I've just kind of resigned myself to the fact that if I'm going to a Star Wars or Marvel film, I'm going to have to endure middle aged weirdo's audible orgasm any time fan service comes up.

It's cringey and embarrassing, but it doesn't really ruin the film.
