The early access preview build of PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds on the Xbox One platform is a mixed experience. Technically, it needs a lot of work. While it's fairly stable on the Xbox One X, you can still expect a sub-30-frames-per-second rate, which is not ideal for a game where aiming and shooting quickly keeps you alive. Meanwhile, on the standard Xbox One with the DVR function left on, things are even worse: stairs can disappear, textures can be splotchy, and disconnects are frequent.

Still, you do occasionally get a stable experience that captures the intensity and essence of what makes PUBG special. Those moment-to-moment encounters where your life is on the line but you come out victorious are still exhilarating. The gamepad controls are cumbersome at first and lack the pixel-perfect accuracy of mouse and keyboard, but once you get used to navigating the menu system, you can get much faster. There is no arguing that a much better system (at least for looting) needs to be implemented.

Keep in mind, this is the earliest version of PUBG, and we hope the console version continues to get the optimizations it desperately needs. Until then, especially if you don't have an Xbox One X, it's difficult to recommend unless you're desperate for a taste of what's made the PC version such a big deal.

Anyone who tries to say "but it's Early Access!" is a fool. If they charge $30 like a commercial game, then they are going to get reviewed like a commercial game.

Nobody really knows how to handle PUBG. Sure it's an Early Access title.

But it's nominated for GOTY on several sites, it's getting marketed as the big holiday exclusive for the Xbox One (Microsoft even filmed a live action trailer for it), has retail versions and is bundled with Xbox One X consoles. It has already sold over 20 million copies.

I think it's fair enough to review it. It's a big game that has a lot of push behind it. More than many AAA titles released this year.

It's conspiracy from Sony. They want people to see how terrible the Xbox One X runs PUBG and hope people return it for a PS4.

Microsoft capitalized on the games growing popularity on PC and threw them a money hat to get it as a console exclusive for this holiday season.

Something went weird with their first party output this year. I think they've done it because they don't really have another major exclusive to bundle/advertise with the Xbox One X.

I very much enjoy the game. I hate when people compare it to Fortnite. Sure they are similar but to me they are very different games and fun in their own way.

If your game isn't finished, you shouldn't sell it for $30 and then expect it to get a free pass in reviews

Let's be honest here - Microsoft got reamed in reviews over having the audacity to release and boast about the Xbox One X while simultaneously canning or delaying any worthwhile exclusives that X1 had. Nearly all GOTY contenders this year are on other consoles. Xbox One X is the best place to play games everyone already has. Microsoft desperately needed something to latch on to, so they chose PUBG. The problem is that it just wasn't ready for prime time.
