You don't need to insofar as seeing the movie and enjoying it, but you'll be missing out on a lot if you don't see the first one.

I saw the first one just last month for the first time and thought it was amazing, especially the end. The sequel was fantastic, too, but very different.

Yeah, the sequel is pretty standalone but you'll get more out of it if you've seen the first.
