It depends on where he lives and how much experience he has though. I work in electronics in the DFW area and they started me out at $11.

Walmart doesn't match pay with other companies. They used to use work credits but, now it only applies to Pay Grades D and C.

Not lazy, but headphones while working are a distraction, at least in retail. Can't hear customers, and likely can't focus on your work and the music/podcast at the same time. A lot of Walmart's etiquette is shitty and makes no sense, but I don't think that's one of them.

I've worked at Walmart for three years so far. It's shitty. I work 36-40 hours a week and make $10.25 an hour. I started at $8 as a part-timer.

Yeah, Walmart is far more anal when it comes to work safety. I've been a customer at other stores where they leave pallets up sideways, don't lower the pallet jack when not moving merchandise, and parked shopping carts in front of emergency exits. You learn quickly at Wally World that all of that can either get you written up or fired pretty easily.

Guess it depends on the management team. My experience has shown they won't let you. Though to be fair, they've just recently cracked down hard on it.

As long as you don't have kids or any major debts to worry about, $13/hour doesn't really classify as very poor or requiring a shoe string budget. Though it also depends what the cost of living is in your area as well.

The only bad thing about retail is that the management tends to suck. If you manage to get into a place with decent management it's one of the best low end jobs you can get. I've had a variety of crappy jobs and retail is by far the best. But, of course, the management there was good.
