I was working for Amazon for 16 an hour but they were making me work 60 hours a week with only one day off. I think that is basically slavery and I'm pretty sure it's illegal in most western european countries.

I took a job at Kroger instead that will be between 36-40 hours a week for 9 an hour because the hours are more reasonable. either way I have enough to pay rent I don't really care.

Why do Americans think it's normal to work so long why is this country so backwards?

This always cracks me up.

Yes I know some people have it worse but that doesn't mean I should also have it worse. That's like telling a slave "hey you think you have it bad look at this other slave"

Like I get it, there are people who work ungodly hours. This should change universally. Jesus you people are dense.

And no this isn't copypasta ignore the trolls.

It isn't all about money. I'd get one literal day to myself and be working all day every other day. I wouldn't get time to enjoy that money in the first place.

But 16 to 9 bucks is a big drop - i wonder where you live the rent is low enough that you can afford that

(protip you can't afford rent unless you're making like triple your rent/expenses)

rent is only 635 and my parents buy me groceries like every two weeks. I just live off of that and ramen noodles I get for myself. The tricky thing is is having to save up for a big bottle of gin/vodka that lasts me several weeks.

Don't feel bad or let anyone make you feel inferior!! You must be happy first of all. I quit a $16 an hour job working for post office where I would work 50 hours a week. Then went into all kinds of less paying jobs. However, I wasn't on the verge of mental breakdown.

Well it was a living at least, but less than a 40k take-home for 6 day work weeks (16/hr * 60hrs/week * 52 weeks = 49,920, minus ~25% for tax = 37k) is pretty depressing.

That said, I don't see how Kroger's at 9/hr is going to pay the bills

I haven't heard of a place that pays hourly being able to get out of overtime (excluding just straight up breaking the law). I could be wrong though.

Also I don't think it's normal for Americans to work this much. Americans need to start exercising their freedom when it comes to their work lives, you know, the thing we brag about constantly in patriotic songs?

I can understand leaving a 60 hrs a week job for a 40 hrs a week job so you have more time away from work. The issue is you went from $16/hr to $9/hr, that is a huge drop and you really should have found a job paying atleast $11 or 13 an hr to keep it about $10 at the very least.

No way I would ever go from $16 to $9 as that is just stupid low money, find a job willing to pay atleast $10-15an hr.

@Colorahdo

Some jobs/careers are a joy to work 60 hrs a week at, depending on what you do and if you love your job 60 hrs a week can be fine.

My job is something I absolutely love, if they asked me to work 6 days a week for a time I would do so.

What kind of job did you have at Amazon? I've heard that working at the warehouses can be brutal but I don't think I've heard anything about a corporate position.

I am looking for a different job but I don't think I could take that drastic of a pay cut like you did. That's mostly because I'm married, have a child due in June '18, and will be moving into a bigger place. You don't seem to have that many responsibilities so I guess you won't hurt as much.

It was just a seasonal warehouse gig. When I went to the interview they said there would be the possibility of two other days of mandatory overtime. I figured that meant once a month or so I might work an extra day. When I went to orientation they flat out said we would be working 6 days a week for the full season, and not just the holiday season it extended further than that.

I felt a little lied to and I was not prepared to work that much so I took a job at Kroger where I have worked previously.

man, I had the exact opposite experience a couple months ago: I was interviewed for a "casual" position, but they used the phrase "lots of hours" several times during the interview when I asked how many hours I could expect, and they used an example of someone who was recently hired who supposedly got 76 hours' pay on her first paycheck. I was thinking "sweet"

in my first week, I had like 10 hours of work. second week I had ~16. it was some serious bullshit. the higher-ups were awful at giving clear instructions too
