I actually want a second job, but it doesn't seem at all possible with my current job's schedule. I work 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. three nights a week and 2:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. the other two (with weekends off).

Why would a second place even hire me when I have such restricted hours and there's probably plenty of other applicants that have open schedules?

They might hire you for the weekend. Or some gig that is in only in the mornings. It depends on what the job is.

They desperately need money for kids/family and apply at literally everywhere until they strike. A lot of places like people who dont expect to be put on full time and who really have a need for the job.

The problem is that I'm "overqualified" for most jobs since I have a (useless) Bachelor's degree, so places like fast food and retail want nothing to do with me.

If I were in a situation where I had to work two jobs just to make ends meet, I'd rather just go on welfare and take the heat from conservatives. Fuck that.

Eh... I could most likely qualify, but it still feels like a shitty thing to do imo. The biggest issue isn't making ends meet, but paying off students loans and credit card debt (which I racked up by trying to live alone for the previous 3 years).

I have a coworker that works the same hours and and has the same degree as me who says she's been applying everywhere for the last 6 months, but hasn't had one offer :/

Do fast food joints actually research to see if you have a degree though? Seems like you could just get into some gig by not telling them shit. I find it hard to believe McDonalds would call up my university asking for a transcript/whatever without me even telling them about it anyway.

Will just point out that a ton of Americans are vastly overqualified for their jobs.

I dont currently work in the morning, how could I possibly work a second job? seems like it has an obvious answer.

It's not about willing to work in the morning, it's about finding someplace that would hire for morning shifts. Any suggestions?

Yeah thats a really easy thing to leave off a resume.

I'm pretty sure they'd ask why I have a ~5 year gap in employment, though.

well it'll usually be on your resume.

but those places won't skip over someone because they're overqualified, just don't expect to go in and start at higher than min wage with no experience just because you have a degree

go see if you have a nursing home kitchen hiring in your area. they usually have 6am-2pm or 7am-3pm shifts as well as 3-7 or 4-8pm night shifts. that's what I do, it can be a really easy job depending on the place

They're both nursing homes in the dietary department. One pays just over 13$ and the other just over 18$. I got the second job by knowing people from the first.

I have been for a year now and I'm working everyday sometimes doing 16 hours a day when I do both jobs on the same day.

At one point I was doing 70hours a week for 3 months and I was ready to quit but I toned it down to 65 hours a week. Honestly the money us nice but I have no social life and I'm struggling to come up with reason s to continue this I'm probably going to drop my part time job next year.

Dont know what to tell ya, just keep working and looking. You can always make excuses to get a job or do white lies. If you wanna work thats whats important. Youre not hurting anybody and nobody cares.

Most businesses are open in the morning. Any retail. Places that need data entry. Coffee shops.

Guess I could try banks again. Most retail places don't open until 10:00 a.m.

grocery stores usually open at 6 but it's hard to start with morning shifts at those places because everyone wants them. I worked in the deli at one once and sometimes I'd only get like 8 customers from 6am-11am

Problem is you're working midday. You need to find a job where you start early like from 9-5 then look for a night shift job thats from 6-11 or something.

True. I wouldn't mind overnight stock shifts or something like Subway/McDonald's, it just goes back to the "overqualified" thing. Suppose I could try changing the resume and lying about school, but idk. I'm a really bad liar and couldn't make up an excuse on the spot.

I really, really like my job though. Plus it's the only one that gave me an offer after applying various places for almost a year, so leaving it would most likely do more harm than good.

they'll hire anyone for minimum wage. I've been a nursing home kitchen manager but that didn't stop anyone from hiring me hourly since then

I did it by working at one place for a while until I was pretty liked/useful/necessary, then taking up the second job on my two consecutive days off from the first job. The first job wasn't completely happy, but they let me do it since I had proven myself already and hadn't asked them for anything else ever, and it worked out very well in the long run. Everyone else there had crazy swinging shifts each week, but I ended up with a locked schedule thanks to that, an unintended benefit.

Ugh I did the same thing for nearly 2 years. Worked my IT job from 8-5 then worked at Staples from 5:30-11. Did that 3-4 weekdays and one 9 hour shift on Saturdays. Idk how I got through it.

Also TC, wtf retail opening at 10am? Maybe on Sundays. Most retail opens at 8am. You should have much issue finding a morning shift somewhere. Restaurant, retail, grocer, gas station. None of those places give a damn what degree you have. They'll pay you their standard rate just the same.

Everything in our mall opens at 10. The nearby Best Buy and GameStop open at 10. The Dollar Tree and Hobby Lobby by them open at 9, but I can't think of anything else open at 8 besides banks and the 24 hour grocery stores.

My thoughts:

> get a retail job in the mornings

> lie about having a degree. If you're worried about your employment gap just fake a job they cannot contact (say you worked at a Blockbuster or Circuit City or something)

> with the holidays coming up several stores will expand hours

> just because the store opens at 10 doesn't mean the employees come in at 10. They probably come in around 9 and you could shoot for a 9-1 gig. That's 20 hours a week, more if you pick up a weekend shift.
