I personally refuse to tip because I am already paying them to do their terrible job to begin with.

Here's how I tip:

- 20% at a restaurant for decent/good service. 30%+ for excellent service. 10% or less for bad service if I absolutely know its the waiter's unapologetic shortcomings/intentional laziness, etc.

-$5-8 for standard takeout deliveries

-$10 bellman

-$10-$20 valet

-$3-5 one night hotel stay. More if it is multiple days or if I need my room cleaned.

-Anywhere from $10-$20 an hour to dealers while I'm gambling, maybe less if I'm losing badly and more if I'm winning bigly. Craps table I tend to place bets for the dealers, so sometimes they end up winning $40 or so for a $5 bet for the crew

-$1-$5 per drink to the cocktail server depending upon the server.

-$1-5 per drink to a bartender, unless I have a tab open---then the same applies as a restaurant server.

I know that it doesn't take any effort to get CE arguing over tipping, but you can still do better than that.

Nothing. Why would i give you free money? If your excuse is "But i make my money through tips", my response is "I'm not your boss, it's not my job to pay you".

Whatever is socially obligatory, but reluctantly. More for good service. Would rather it be a bonus rather than expected and workers were paid fairly from the start, but we've been over this.

This. Really, it is the job of the employer to compensate their employees, but I'll still play into the system and tip if the server is good. If they're shitty servers I'm not wasting my money.

on a related note, i was trying to be conservative the other night and leave a one-dollar tip (instead of the two-dollar tip) but noticed that the bartender gave me back too much change. what luck! now i can leave a two-dollar tip without stressing about being broke!

You have it backwords :(

Anywhere from 10-20% at sit down restaurants, usually only more if I'm buzzed on alcohol - I usually just go to these on dates so it doesn't break the bank. Order take out if you're not willing to tip - almost any restaurant will oblige and then you don't have to feel awkward about tipping...you're tipping at these places because the waiter has to serve you and that's how they make their living.

At bars, I standard do a $1 per drink tip. So if I get two drinks (like for a date) I automatically have $2 on hand to tip. It's a good thing to do since the bartender will be more attentive. I'm known at a few spots as a consistent tipper and I get good service. To those who don't tip - good for you. I literally don't care about your opinion about it.

I tip a lot because I value others more than myself and I was probably going to waste it anyway
