So, now that Mario has been formally rejected by Peach, he might start looking elsewhere.

And there's one particular girl in Odyssey that seems to really have a thing for him. Mayor Pauline.

She sings songs about him, talks about being his '1-up girl', and is wearing his hat while singing.

So my question is, do you ship Mario and Mayor Pauline?

I'm thinking maybe he saves HER in Odyssey 2?

She's done pretty much the definition of 'friend-zone' him.

She rejected his proposal, and now she's traveling all the kingdoms of the world to get space. I mean, when Mario shows up, she's still friendly, but she's obviously not looking to settle down with him.

I think Mario and Mayor Pauline would make a great couple together. Peach is so stuck up, but Pauline seems to actually respect Mario, and even like him.

If they make an Odyssey 2 and have Pauline kidnapped it's only fair to bring back DK as the main villain again.

I think I would actually like that for a change of pace.

They toyed with the idea a lot in Odyssey.

Donkey Kong made several appearances.

I don't think they could make him the MAIN villain of Odyssey 2, because Bowser, etc, but they could make a real Donkey Kong plotline, instead of just brief appearances by 2d DK.

Yeah, true, Nintendo might've already gone too far with DK's boy-scout image for it to work now.

They can throw in old references to 1980's games without ruffling any feathers, but if you cast him as a straight up 3d, fully acted out at villain, you might step on the toes of the DK series. Although if you make the characters a bit different, you could potentially break it off as a separate canon. Presumably the Odyssey DK would be a big different(comically large, for one)

Nintendo does seem more willing to take chances story-wise lately. I could see a scenario where Pauline and Peach are meeting together in NDC and Bowser shows up to kidnap Peach. Then DK swoops in, a short dialogue ensues. Bowser mouths off to DK and punches Bowser into the next Kingdom. Because let's be honest, if DK and Bowser ever throw down, that's only going one way.

Then DK would be the main villain, but Bowser would be plotting his revenge. Meanwhile Mario is stuck in the middle.

The creative risks really make the series a better game, and even though there's not even that much story, the fan reaction to Odyssey's new twists and turns on things was huge.

Peach keeps buying off Mario with cake so he doesn't see the gaping canyon between her legs that Bowser leaves behind every time she's "kidnapped".

Pauline is actually a much more pleasant person.

Mario defeats some piranha plants in the sewers and rounds up some musicians and she recognizes him at their festival and dedicates a song to him.

Mario travels across the world and into space to save Peach and she acts like a stuck up a bitch and tries to steal his ship.

She was just upset at how childish he was acting at the moment and walked off in a huff. I didn't take it as any form of rejection, just her being miffed that Mario thought he had to compete with Bowser and was doing so in a dumb way.

That'd complicate things though. Cranky Kong is more or less canonically regarded as the original Donkey Kong. He's presented again in his youthful Pauline-kidnapping form in handheld games like Mario Vs. Donkey Kong, but D.K. is the Donkey Kong of the main Mario continuity now.

It wouldn't make sense for a cranky old man to suddenly be a young giant kidnapping women again.

Mario Canon is that every game is essentially a play, with the characters just taking on a role for that story. Yes, it's every game, not just Super Mario Bros 3 and Mario Party 2.

It's highly unlikely that they would bring back characters after a 30 year absence though. Super Mario Bros. 2 / Super Mario USA needs more love though. In Japan, it was just a weird off-take of that disk game, Doki Doki Panic. In the west, it was the second part of the Mario trilogy on NES.

I don't think Nintendo really understands what it means to western gamers of that era to replace the Koopa Pack with Wart and company and then virtually never speak of them again.

A number of enemies and various elements of the game have continued to be a part of the ongoing series. They're still missing some key characters like Wart, Mouser, and Triclyde.

How many times has Mario had mouse themed enemies in his games? How many times has Mouser himself returned?

He was pretty good with the bombs.
