I've only played the first on all the way to completion.

I will give my impressions, maybe, if I feel like it in this topic. It might depend on how much I like it, or if I ditch it and decide to come back to it another time like most of my library that has been sitting around.

don't burn yourself out on sub-missions; that can affect how you feel about the game negatively.

I mean, some of them are fine, like the lost soldiers, but saving the umpteenth prisoner or getting some blueprints don't really add to the experience

Do the side missions if you really like doing side missions?

Fulton everything and everyone and don't be afraid of calling in ammo refills. They will give you more fultons.

Also when you can move soldiers to specific teams, I always like putting R&D first. Upgrade the silenced tranq and fultons asap whenever you see them. Don't waste resources on making stuff you think you'll never use. Also upgrade your binoculars (I think) whenever possible because you can scan enemies to see their stats. Upgrade night vision whenever you see it ready too because it makes a big difference.

There's a side mission where you look for a legendary gunsmith that seems to be a throw away, but do it. You don't get a silenced tranq sniper for a very long time in the game, but by doing that side mission you can make your own.

Biggest tip is when you build a medical platform on mother base spend sometime looking around there. There's a nice little something you can find there that no other platform has.

Oh! And when you are done with a mission objective and just want to return to motherbase or just get to another area fast don't bother calling in a chopper. Takes forever and you have to watch a boring cutscene. Pause the game and select return to AAC.

Also I don't think the game ever tells you this, but when you get your third buddy, you can go to the map and select locations for them to actually go to and scout out ahead of you.

Also I really hope you played Peace Walker & Ground Zeroes first.

Yeah, I was shocked with how relevant they tried to make Peace Walker. All I could think was, wasn't that the MGS game for PSP that no one played?

Also are you familiar with the series at all? If you don't care about the story it doesn't really matter, but you are GONNA be lost.

Then again the Phantom Pain has a super disappointing lack of story, so if you're just in it for the gameplay you'll be fine.

I'd still say Ground Zeroes is worth playing through though. I actually enjoyed the one mission in Ground Zeroes more than any other in the Phantom Pain. The bonus missions in Ground Zeroes were fun too.

I could write up a quick summary of what's going on if you want some sort of idea of the story going into the game. At least of the relevant plot points that show up in V.

I feel like Kingdom Hearts get more bullshit for this than Metal Gear. Even KH's card game was better at least.

Alright quick summary up to Ground Zeroes:

WARNING MAJOR MGS2, MGS3, MGS4 & PEACEWALKER SPOILERS BELOW! DO NOT READ IF YOU EVER HAVE ANY INTENTION OF PLAYING THOSE GAMES

-Big Boss aka Naked Snake or just Snake worked for the CIA and was trained by a legendary solider named the Boss who was also like a mother figure to him.
-Snake gets sent to rescue a scientist during the Cold War, but the Boss betrays him and joins the Soviet Union.
-Long story short Snake saves the day and kills the Boss, but later finds out she was under orders from the American government to pretend to join the Soviets.
-And the real mission was to retrieve a microfilm with billions of dollars on it, so Snake basically killed his mentor for money.
-The money was pooled from America, Russia and China during World War 1 as they created a shadow organization that sort of ruled the world. Think Illuminati. They eventually broke apart and Russia stole the money, the Boss was ordered to retrieve it under cover and in the end accomplished her mission.
-Snake is given the title of Big Boss and his CO during that mission "Major Zero" starts Fox.
-Ocelot (from MGS1) was also working for the CIA as a spy in the Soviet Union fought against Big Boss during the mission and began to idolize him because he was just so damn cool (and they were essentially on the same side in the end).
-That was all MGS3.
-Sometime after that Major Zero recruits Big Boss, Ocelot and other members of the MGS3 support team and have possession of the billions of dollars (known as the Philosopher's Legacy) . The group is known as the Patriots.
-The Patriots basically take over the world more or less and control things with Zero at the helm.
-Zero turns Big Boss into a famous war hero so everyone begins to idolize him. Big Boss doesn't like this among other questionable practices Zero's been doing.
-Zero basically controls all the media, controls the governments, etc.
-Big Boss gets injured in battle and goes into a coma. Zero worries he might lose his best friend and best ally, so he clones him.
-This is where you get Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake (who shows up in MGS2 trying to overthrow the Patriots).

-Big Boss wakes up, finds out about this and it's the last straw. He leaves the Patriots and starts his own private military known as Militaires Sans Frontires (French for Soldiers Without Borders).
-He starts it a solider named Kaz, who is McDonald Miller from MGS1 (the guy Liquid killed and pretended to be).
-So now the Patriots lead by Zero (who starts going by Cipher) start going after Big Boss, seeing his army as a threat.
-This is where Peace Walker starts.
-Big Boss and Kaz are hired to fight in wars for people and end up recruited by a guy named Zadornov who brings along a young girl named Paz.
-They head to Cuba to help a resistance where a solider named Amanda and her young brother Chico join them.
-A scientist named Huey (who is Otacon's father) switches sides and joins Big Boss along with another scientist named Dr. Strangelove (who Huey has a crush on).
-Long story short, they stop a Metal Gear while building up "Mother Base" which is a big station in the middle of the ocean.
-They also build their own Metal Gear and get a nuke.
-And Zadornov was evil all along, but they kill him.
-But it turns out Paz was working for Zero all along.
-She's been staying at Mother Base and starts liking the people there, especially Chico who has a crush on her.
-She gets exposed as a spy, hijacks the Metal Gear and Big Boss fights her.
-Paz gets blown into the ocean.
-Also Kaz reveals he's been working with Zero as well, but is really on Snake's side.
-That's the end of Peace Walker and where Ground Zeroes starts off.
