I never really pay attention to soundtracks, but there were some good western ones from last gen (Mass Effect series, Red Dead Redemption, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Max Payne 3, etc.) --- b-bb-box ... Copied to Clipboard!

Heck yeah, dudes. I can easily remember every individual sound track from the Persona games to Zelda to Dark Souls/Bloodborne. Even the newest Mario game has a banging soundtrack so far.
Can't say the same about Elder Scrolls or Call of Duty or Mortal Kombat. There are a bunch of good individual tracks but it's not consistent. Too much of Western games sound samey in my opinion especially now compared to the past. --- ... ... Copied to Clipboard!

It's more a stylistic thing.
Western games often take a cinematic approach to their OSTs, where the music is made more to be immersive than to be memorable. It's not my thing but it works. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

There are plenty of western games with great soundtracks, but the Japanese devs definitely take their soundtracks more seriously. They also tend to favour catchier tunes over "atmospheric"/background music. Western devs tend to take the view that soundtrack should enhance the experience and no more, while for Japanese devs, good music is an end in itself.
