That has since changed though. Donald Trump would not be president without the unanimous support of racists and xenophobes. Trump has done nothing to quiet these people, and if anything has emboldened them.

That's true, but while I'm not going to pretend not one single republican is racist, I definitely think a lot of Trump voters were non-party people and crossover democrats. Racists of various types. Not fair to put all the blame on republicans. >_> Maybe he'd have sniped off one of them, but Trump wouldn't have won Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin without pulling in some non-GOP voters. Probably a lot of blue color union democrats, who in my anecdotal experience are the most racist people I come across. They're generally gun loving moderates that vote democrat because the union tells them to and hate the mexicans that are stealing their jobs.
