"To Kill a Mockingbird" is being removed from a junior-high reading list in a Mississippi school district.

The Sun Herald reports that Biloxi administrators pulled the novel from the 8th-grade curriculum this week. School board vice president Kenny Holloway says the district received complaints that some of the book's language "makes people uncomfortable."

Published in 1960, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee deals with racial inequality in a small Alabama town.

A message on the school's website says "To Kill A Mockingbird" teaches students that compassion and empathy don't depend upon race or education. Holloway says other books can teach the same lessons.

The book remains in Biloxi school libraries.

True.

That being said, it's true of a great deal of books and you don't have time to study them all.

I completely agree on its merits but is this the time where we argue and pretend TKAM hasn't been one of the more controversial in terms of being allowed for at least like 25 years now? I remember reading it in like 10th grade and we had to have a waiver signed by a guardian due to its language and discussion matters

I don't know about all that, but I like the idea of TKAM being about a young daughter's hero worship of her father regardless of the father's actual character, and how she eventually has to come to terms with that.

It's so stupid when they do this.

Yes, the book contains some pretty brutal racial slurs. More imporantly, however, it goes on to spend the entirety of its pages explicitly showing you why that sort of philosophy is not only inherently flawed, but morally wrong.

I understand that with racial tensions being what they are right now, it may be difficult. But so is advanced calculus. It's about the end goal and what you are teaching children. If you just shuffle every difficult thing behind a curtain, they are going to grow up thinking that there is no problems in the world and that they can just turn a blind eye to social issues.

And then we end up in a morally blank society that is willfully ignorant of the myriad of social problems in the world today, a society that bans books because of their language and not because of their content.
