This isn't what happened. She made a tweet calling a panel of female game developers the "pretty side of game development"

It's not like she was fired for trying to give a coworker a compliment.

even if you think it would demean the women for calling them pretty, it's not the same thing when a fellow woman says it. it's quite obvious by how she said it, that she groups herself in with the pretty side. so if she is demeaning, she's also demeaning herself.

Honestly this is why I play mainly Japanese games and no longer associate myself with Americans (it's not just Americans I'm using that as an example since I live here) everyone gets way to upset about stupid shit.

I blame the internet I know people want to say everyone has a voice or opinion but most of the time it's a shit opinion that shouldn't be given a platform (including my own I've said some dumb stuff over the years)

How hard is it to not comment on someone's physical appearance at work? I certainly wouldnt say "here's my handsome team of men!"

Its an overreaction for sure, but it still baffles me that people cant control what they say at work. Anything relating to physical appearance can be an HR issue.

This.

One thing that is horribly overlooked in any type of movement is that before you can get the other side to listen to you, you first need full support from your own side.

So while it's a great sign that more and more men get on board with gender equality and the like, none of that will make a difference if women can't pull in other women; and right now (as has been for quite some time) women down for the cause seem to be trying to drag their comrades along rather than creating a real dialogue with them that helps actually bridge the gap.

But what the hell do I know - I'm not a woman *shrugs*

As opposed to BLM demanding the houses of white people?

Or calling mid-terms white supremacy?

Or making misgendering more criminal than knowingly giving someone HIV?

Or saying someone is a rapist for kissing a woman who had a glass of wine?

Other feminists in game development soon piled on, stating that Wiznerowiczs use of the word pretty diminished their professional accomplishments.

Her innocuous tweet was met with immediate fury from transgender game developers like No Mans Skys Innes McKendrick, who assumed Wiznerowiczs gender, and demanded that she shut the hell up and listens to them.

So women have been complaining about men dominating games development, being bullied, harrassed and what not. But apparantly THEY are the problem. Holy fucking shit, reading the above two paragraphs made me think it was satire, but this bullshit is real..

It can actually, when you're supposed to be talking about their abilities. For example if you introduce a female doctor as "beautiful" then you're suggesting her looks are the most important thing about her, or the first thing worth mentioning. This happens to women regularly.

it was a woman that did it though. so it's different. and she was just joking on twitter. and she includes herself in the "pretty side". it's not the same as a man saying it at all

If someone calls you pretty, and the takeaway you get is, "this person's complinent on my looks diminishes my accomplishments", then you are the problem. Because if you cannot seperate how you look, from what you have achieved, that is on you.

That's nonsense. Praising or mentioning one quality of a person doesn't disparage or diminish their other qualities. A woman can be pretty and accomplished.

The backlash this person received over an innocuous remark is ridiculous.

What does that popular video say? "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but there will always be something to offend a feminist. "

Imagine if you were introduced to people as "this is my friend Esrac, the guy who loves My Little Pony." (Note, I don't know if you actually watch MLP. I'm just using it as an example).

At this point, it doesn't matter what you've accomplished, how good your grades are, how nice of a guy you are. I've just told people that you're a grown man who enjoys a little girl's TV show, and that's what is going to stick in their minds about you for a while and it's going to take a while for them to take you seriously as a person.

This is the basis for a lot of those Ricky Gervais jokes from when he hosts award shows, and why they're so funny. "Our next presenter is the only person Ben Affleck has remained faithful to, it's Matt Damon!" He doesn't say Ben Affleck is an actor or director, he says Ben is a serial cheater and that's what people should pay attention to. "When Brad and Angelina see our next two presenters, they're going to want to adopt them. Please welcome Kevin Hart and Ken Jeong." Gervais is saying "forget these people are accomplished actors--two of them make a point of adopting multicultural children, and the other two are comically short men."

If "mentioning one quality of a person didn't disparage or diminish their other qualities", then those jokes wouldn't work. But they do, and they're hilarious, because that's exactly what he's doing. When you're talking about a professional, but you talk about their appearance first, you're doing something similar.
