Fighting games require immense execution, adaption, reactions, and research to play adaquately. The skill ceiling is so high such that it's uncommon to see a significant skill gap between any two players. Unlike other popular competitive multiplayer titles like CSGO and DOTA2, fighting game players have no reliance on teammates for support and to compensate for each others weaknesses.
There is a heavy burden on fighting games players to become proficient in the challenges of fighting games. This includes frame data analysis, match-up specific knowledge, combo execution, fundamental footsies, and specific setups. Despite all these challenges, the higher difficulty curve makes victories and rewards more satisfying for the player. In addition, this produces a higher replay value such that players always have a motivation to strive higher above others this is why decade old games like super turbo and kof 96 are still played today while games of other competitive genres like quake 3 and starcraft 1 are dead --- ...
