I wanna say my favorite side-character is Anko, but I haven't seen or read actual Naruto stuff in years so I can't tell if that's because she's an actually good character, or if I only like her so much due to fanfiction portrayals. Was she as underutilized as I can only assume she totally was?

yes she was barely in the series
she had a cool design and a focus episode during the year of filler hell (though to be fair her filler 2 parter was actually ok)

filler hell was awful but a handful of the episodes were watchable.
usually the ones involving hinata because the people writing the filler adored her so they put actual effort into those episodes

Yup. She literally does nothing of usefulness (literally, nothing) the whole time she's in the series, not counting filler. It's a shame, because she really seemed interesting when she first appeared.

Also, she becomes fat at the end of the series.

Don't worry, he doesn't. Lee vs. Gaara is actually the single greatest fight in the whole series.

I like his personality and even his looks. His gimmick of taijutsu is nice. A breath of fresh air from Sasuke spamming fire crap

Nah, Lee is my favorite of the rookies, but he's a typical underdog type character who trains his ass off. He certainly stands out from most other Naruto characters, though, since he just uses taijutsu.

I think he can control it to small amounts (like standing/running on water), but I don't think taijutsu needs it, since it's basically just punching and kicking

Tbh it bugs me that naruto beat Neji and Sasuke stole Lee's taijutsu the guy works harder than anyone only for some dude to beat his rival and some other dude to steal his signature technique that he spent years working on, in a month

btw TC, I recommend the manga over the anime for viewing the series from start to finish, but most of the fights are much better in the anime. Definitely watch Lee vs. Gaara in the anime to get the best experience of the fight.

Other fights you've already seen in the manga so far are that were done much better in the anime are Naruto vs. Neji and Sasuke vs. Gaara (at the exams).
