Well, they could deliver better graphics than a normal console.
And the basic idea wasnt new, we had multiple arcade games running from Laserdiscs.
Not watching that video so I dont know if it is mentioned, but Night Trap was originally recorded for a VHS console.

7th guest and ripper were good CGI games

Ripper even had the actor Christopher Walken AND Blue Oyster Cult in a single video game

The action max was awesome, and it's still awesome. It was basically VHS blaster games. People are still making mods for it. They set it up so you can set target indicators over any video, so now when everyone gets shitfaced together, you can compete to see can shoot Justin Bieber in his stupid face the most. Good times for all.

I imagine VHS consoles could still play regular movies too. If anything that was an early attempt to give gamers a multimedia console and possibly only failed due to bad games and marketing. PS3 was basically trying to sell a Blu Ray player as a game console at first so it wasn't much different. They just had the software and the marketing spin.

This is not the same thing.

You shoot at one of those seizure-lights, and then an external light you have to attach to the screen blinks red, and your score increments by one whenever you land a hit, or decrements if you miss four shots. The video never changes.

Nope. You had to have your own VCR, at least for the Action Max. The "console" is the thing you needed to hook up to the VCR.

How is that much different from Duckhunt?
The View-Master Interactive Vision was another VHS console that allowed simple videogames with graphics similar to the Colecovision to be played during the course of the videotape, and the movies had two soundtracks that changed depending on your choices which made it look like a different game. Like in Muppet Madness, the ingame Muppet show is either a soap opera or a science fiction.

No interactivity whatsoever.

None at all.
