Hajime Tabata, director of Final Fantasy XV, said that it is too early to ensure that the next project will be an open world, but made it clear that at least they will seek to replicate the feeling of being in a large area.

“It’s hard to say at this point if the entire game is gonna be based on an open world,” Tabata said to GameSpot. “But I would say that the overall experience that users get from playing in a massive area, that overall game experience is something that we’re gonna make sure is in the next project as well.”

In addition, Tabata talked about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and what his team could learn from the title of Nintendo. Although he clarified that he has not played the title because he does not have a Switch, he said that the staff in charge has told him great things about the game.

“I’ve heard a lot from the dev team and their reactions to having played it. But just from hearing the stories and the feedback, you know, we can tell that it’s a really complete game,” he said. “It’s very polished, almost a perfect game in that regard. And our goals are probably to take that experience that players felt with Breath of the Wild, but with our own technology and our own know-how.”

“We have in our disposal to create a very, very high-quality game with a strong visual element to it, while creating a world that’s really immersive and really beautiful. That’s probably our goals in terms of what we want to be with our next project.”

For now, the team of Tabata is working on Episode Ignis and the multiplayer section of Final Fantasy XV. Later, in early 2018, the game will arrive on PC.

FFS what is with this open world fad

Anyone else miss the simple semi-linear games where you could go slightly out of your way but not overly so?

Hell, give me another FF13 instead

FFXV was their first attempt at an open world game.

The map and travel were awful but I thought the combat was fun as fuck.

I'm sure if he called up Miyamoto and said "let me release this shitty XV port on the Switch" he'd send one over to him.

maybe you should just go back to the formula that worked for you for years
you dont need a large open world if the story and world feels immersive and we care about the cast.

return the battle system to the ATB style that worked for 4 5 6 7 8 9 and X2

its a simple gameplay that is fun and doesnt need gimmicks to work
then you can focus on the world building and make the world feel huge

we saw in 13 your idea of a large world is empty and lacking in heart
i long for the days when final fantasy was good

Yeah, I think writing off final fantasy as a lost cause is a good call.

For me at least.

It's fine if they want to head in a different direction than they initially started on. I wish them the best of luck and hold no bad opinion of those who choose to follow them. But I'm headed somewhere else.

Did you see Octopath Traveler? While not ATB, definitely feels like a FF6 type title.

[BotW is] a really complete game

Which is why they had to add basic features into the first DLC pack, right?

IIRC Pocket Edition was basically already kinda confirmed for Switch.

XV's combat was all flash but with zero depth and challenge. SE needs to overhaul it first.

I would like them to do that. With modern hardware, they could make an awesome world map. There could still be a decent level of open-endedness, but without the large, empty areas that true open worlds often suffer from. They wouldn't need to populate it with generic quests either to try and make it seem not so barren. Basically, have a world where every area has a purpose and populate it with meaningful content.

On combat, go with a turn-based system, but improve the presentation and add some bells and whistles to make it more exciting (e.g. some small real-time elements, like in Shadow Hearts and/or an SMT/Persona style Press Turn / One More system). Have characters that move around and fight between turns rather than just standing still.

Or, go with a real-time system, but expand on the ability to pause it and micro-manage a party and add some more strategic elements.

I appreciate that they need to be seen to be innovating and embracing modern trappings to attract new players, but they can meet the traditionalists half-way at least.

I'm not a fan of FF15's combat. To be honest, I even prefer Type-0's combat. At least you have a variety of characters with their own combat styles and can switch between them easily.
