Writers tend to be people who think about life and the world way too much. If you think about it too much then you'll become depressed. Then add on the fact that you're struggling to get your work published and the stuff you do get published it just fluffy bullshit without substance and you feel like you're wasting your life away. So it no wonder that a lot of them become alcoholics.

A little bit of alcohol helps you write sometimes, because it lowers that threshold, gets you starter writing when you would otherwise start at the blank page unable to start.
