My brother is five years older than me and that age gap was pretty conflicting when I grew up. We didn't spend that much time together. But recently after moving abroad the dude never contacts me or reaches out. Every contact needs to be initiated by me. Then one day I realized I barely know him. How would I feel if he were to die? How sad would I be?

It's weird. I feel like I should hit him up, but then again why should I always be the one?

That's kinda sad, but I don't think there is a duty to know ones family member unless it naturally developed. If you want to make a relationship though, you are free to do so.

My brother is severely mentally handicapped and lived away from home starting several years ago so I have a similar feeling that I can't know him. Feels bad man.

Naw. But that's exactly how I feel about my dad. We live in the same city, He helped me tremendously in moving out of my moms but we never actually talk or do anything together.

Yeah, we were never really close. I never talk to him and maybe see him a handful of times a year. No animosity, I just don't think about him.

that really sucks TC. 5 years is a pretty big gap when you're a kid (i.e. it's the difference between being a high school freshman and a college student) so it might make sense that you guys have little in common, but still, he should reach out to you because you're family. sucks that it become one sided.

Have you ever asked your brother why he never reaches out? Let him know you'd appreciate it if he did once in a while.

It might feel good to express that to him if you never have.

Sounds like a good plan and an honest thing to do. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Interesting to read that some CEmen have the same problem. What's also weird is the fact that I became a father last year, yet he never asks how we are doing. When we visited my family he barely interacted with my child. I can't really blame him, not everybody is fond of kids and there's always some safety distance to babies.

I have a much better relationship with my two brothers in law. Man, thinking about this is really sad. Shouldn't really be that way. Maybe that's just his way. He never voluntarily interacted much with the family. I'll ask. Thanks for helping, CE.

Brother was 5 years older than me. We were as close as can be growing up, hell, most of the stuff I like today is because I wanted to be like him. Sucks that he passed last year, not a day goes by that I don't think of him.

a couple years ago i'd have said no. we were basically best friends (only 1 1/2 years apart) and had a very similar friend group, also went to the same uni and lived together in an apartment
but eventually I left the state for training in my big boy job, and after coming back we weren't that close. I left to do a detail in another state, and by the time I came back he and I had to force ourselves to hang out.
fast forward to last christmas, and he brings his girlfriend to our family get-together. I can't stand anything about her, and he gets upset that I don't like her.

today's his birthday, we talked on the phone this morning and it went well, but overall i'd say me leaving for my job set off a chain reaction that ended up with him dating an ogre I can't stand

The guy did rape her. The only reason I didn't immediately kill my brother is because I had already tried to kill that guy, and put him in a coma, and was out on bail. Didn't want to actually kill someone while I was waiting for those charges to get dropped.

She's fine, barely even remembers it. Honestly, it probably fucked me up a lot more because I was supposed to be there that night, and ditched her at the last minute to go have sex with some whore. Hard pill to swallow when you feel completely responsible for something like that happening to someone you love.
