There are very few media in the whole world that's not plagued by melodrama. I'd say the rate of melodrama in Western and Eastern media is probably about the same though. But if you don't watch a whole lot of anime, you'd probably think like TC

TC is right. And it's not just the melodrama, but also the anime mannerisms, like how they always make sounds like "mmph" and "ahah" when they smile or nod or do any motion or just look at somebody. Or how ridiculous so many female characters sound because Japan is so obsessed with trying to make cute things.

Japanese voice actresses are the best. They have the sexiest voices

It's the male characters that sound ridiculous because they try too fucking hard to sound cool

other mediums of entertainment might have like a 90-95% suck meter but in anime it's pretty much 99%

try an anime called Monster. it's a realistic show set in the 80's about a Japanese doctor working in Germany who saves the life of a boy, and then later the boy becomes a young man and a serial killer. and the doctor feels responsible so heads out to hunt him down and stop him. and like 99% of the cast is at least in their 30's. I can only think of a single person on the show who is like 18 or early 20's

I feel like this is mainly a modern anime problem, since I don't remember anime being this pandering, cliche, and formulaic back in the 90s and early 2000s.

Now almost every anime is set in a high school setting, or will have some kind of stupid fanservice in the first two episodes or something. Or it'll try shamelessly to appeal to its core male demographic in other ways, like with New Game!, which will probably hook guys in with the video game-y title alone, but apparently it's about a bunch of cute girls who do art, programming, and other work on creating video games. It's like the creators just wanted to lazily throw in a whole bunch of shit they know their demographic likes, including a bunch of lewd fanservice.

There really is so much garbage anime out there, the problem is that most of the garbage is also the most popular and the most accessible.

Everyone here saying this isn't an issue - when was the last time you took a look at the anime selections on say, Crunchyroll or Netflix? Yes, if you consult the internet and find some more underground critically acclaimed choices you can avoid this crap, but thepoint is just that most of the anime you can readily get your hands on is a total shitfest.

It's made for otaku because that's the demographic that actually spends money on it. When intellectuals are willing to shell out money for deep and thought-provoking anime, that's when you'll see more of it. But for New Game specifically, it's because the author actually worked in the games industry and so just wrote what he knew.

If you pay absolutely no attention to either, sure.

I don't think TWD is necessarily bad, but it does not have well-crafted story arcs. Death in game of Thrones is not generally for the purpose of shock value because the plot continues to move after the death and the death in question ends up driving future events.

This applies for the death of main characters in GoT vs. the far more sporadic and poorly structured use of death in TWD. Deaths that occurred early in GoT are part of the genesis that cause massive events in the series due to the political fallout of said major deaths, whereas TWD really doesn't have anything like that.

TWD tilts towards shock value more often because its cast is largely expendable since there's not real plot to the show. GoT has a very intricate plot, meaning killing characters without purpose can completely derail everything. Hence, the deaths have purpose and impact on the story long-term. There are a myriad of examples of this compared to TWD.

This is even worse if we're comparing things to anime like Attack on Titan where AoT doesn't even have the benefit of good scripting. It's a much worse version of Neon Genesis Evangelion in terms of anime (lacking the structure that tears Shinji apart emotionally) and it can easily be compared to TWD in its use of shock value before good writing. That's a good example of poor melodrama in anime and can be applied to several series. I don't really disagree that a lot of (mostly modern) anime series go for shock value, but your comparison is pretty bad.

Game of Thrones has had some bad writing and moments I think would qualify as "shock value" but generally speaking no, its methods and TWD's methods aren't the same. Both are very different shows with very different settings. You don't have a very good grasp on writing if you watch both and think "Major character deaths = shock value = the same durrrrrrr".

You have selection bias because anime in the 90s and 00s was definitely like that as well. There is always good anime mixed in with the sea of crap.

i don't think realism is really the problem

monster's fantastic but stuff like shinsekai yori and bebop are great despite veering away from being a gritty crime thriller

it's just a tendency to have poor direction, poor scripting, etc.
