Make it so that it seems innocent enough for impressionable kids to play it. And then creep them out the entire way under strict time limits, before giving them permanent nightmares by the end.

And never ever once mention any of the creepy stuff in the promotional material or marketing.

Scariest game ever

My only 500 topic was on the Ecco board talking about how terrifying the game was. Wish it was still there :(

Was there actually a story to Ecco, or was it just a crack driven adventure about a Dolphin who travels through time and fights aliens.

I wonder how many little girls foolishly bought that game, because you play as a dolphin with stars on his head...

Wish I had the 3D game. Heard it wasn't that good, but the only one I never got to play.

I remember the Tv commercials.. they made the game look fun and beautiful.
Rented it, slowly started to understand what was going on but by the end I barely made any progress and thought to myself "where's all the good stuff from the ads?"

I had level select codes I wish I hadnt explored.. theres on stage that throws you in an ocean with nothing but a dozen sharks.

So yeah.. no idea why or what made the game so popular and/or hyped up

Yeah, that was Seaman.
It got a sequel on the PS2.

I remember there was a level in Tides of Time that I could never figure out.

In fact, I don't think I've ever gone back to it now that I'm older and (should be) able to figure things out like that.

The final boss and level creeped me out when I was younger going through it.

The music was so good in this game. Really helped develop the environments in my opinion. The difficulty was a bit harsh, but with enough perseverance the pay off was huge when one figured out the exit for whichever level.

The map mechanic was brilliant, also.

I actually beat Ecco way back when it first came out. I'd like to be able to say my video game skills have improved... But now I can't beat Ecco anymore as of about a year or 2 ago when I last played it. I have no idea how I ever made it past many of these brutal levels when I was in elementary school.

I think that's where I got stuck. Never beat it

I think this was in Ecco 2, but still. It was definitely one of the many stressful and creepy levels as you were just in a deep blue sea filled with sharks and seemingly nowhere to go. The best way to beat the level from what I remember is to just haul ass and skip along the top of the water, moving to the right, until the level ends.
