I used to rent multi-disc games from blockbuster and just keep 1 of the discs before returning it until I had the complete game

Had the same problem with Target. Luckily, I was a kid and was impatience, and I opened the game in the car. The CS lady did question it, but she was like I'm not getting paid enough to deal with this and gave me an exchange.
