So thinking about the movie made me realize it was shit. The film suffered from too of Tell don't Show. Which is not something you want to do in a movie.

In the Anime, we are constantly shown in clever and smart ways how L and Light are pretty much Intellectual rivals. L also doesn't just come right out and say "I know you're Kira." till he has 100% proof. Even when he suspects Light could be Kira. He basically keeps it to himself and also tries to get Lights help on the case, to keep a close eye on him.

Also, Light is constantly shown has being incredibly smart too. Setting up a fire trap for the Death Note, leaving a fake diary/Journal in the desk with the keys in the drawer. Only taking like one page with him when he goes out. etc.

The movie Light takes it with him, and then basically blurts it out what it is to Mia. It also get's stolen way too easily.

While some could argue that this is an adaptation, and there are going to be changes. The problem is that the film basically constantly contradicts itself. It says Light is a genius, yet he does dumb shit all the time. It says L is a Genius, yet he also does dumb shit too. It says you cannot defy the laws of Physics, yet Light does that at the end of the film.

Also movie Ryuk sucks ass. I liked how in the Anime he was basically a neutral troll to Light. He could care less what happens, but still taunts him when Light screws up or get's outsmarted. Movie Ryuk just doesn't do anything, or have any character development.

But his first conversation with Light he tells him that he's pretty sure he's Kira. Though he then tells him that he did it because if Light was Kira, that would put the most pressure on him.

He doesn't say "I know you're Kira." he says he's like 5% sure he's Kira. (Which means he's actually 90% sure.). The issue is that both of them in Anime are constantly shown has being smart and clever. In the film.. They both act like idiots. Light does nothing to prove he's an actual genius, and L does nothing to prove he's an actual genius either.

definitely agree with this - in the movie, Light was specifically chosen to receive the Death Note, and Ryuk pretty much bullies him along the way

Also apparently movie Light was chosen, and Ryuk is constantly telling to use it. In the Anime he basically says that he dropped it and he could care less about Light being a genius. The only time movie Ryuk tried to pull that was when he kept telling him to leave it for 7 days and he'll give it to somebody else.

I enjoyed the movie and never saw the anime from what everyone says though it's hard to squeeze in so much into a movie. As for the dumb decision making it's pretty dumb how this movie gets criticize for it but others such as Toy Story get the free pass like when Buzz says he's not a toy but acts like one when Andy shows up, etc...I know the acting is pretty bad but overall going in blind it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Even if you take it as just a movie on it's own merits. It still kind of fails. I didn't find the characters that interesting, and I found the pacing and plot way too contradicting of itself.

They wanted L to be the greatest Detective, yet he didn't do anything to prove how good he was. They didn't even do anything to show smart Light was. He was basically a whiny bitch, who said dumb shit for a guy who's supposedly a genius. "If you hit me, It's technically Child Abuse!"
