Its message is just accessible because of the si-fi and fantasy elements and toilet humor. But my friends made me watch the first season of it, and I had no desire to keep going after that; I didn't even want to keep watching that one season. Overall it's a terrific show, but the quality is all over the place right now and it feels like it's still trying to find its footing because it got popular really fast. Perhaps it never will because the humour is so whimsical and ambivalent. What this overall means is you get some terrific episodes and some stellar moments, and then a whole lot of fart jokes. Then there's the fanbase. The fans are the worst. They think they've tapped into some kind of higher culture that only hipsters know about, even though you can't get away from the show right now. It has Kim Kardashian popularity but for some reason the fans act like they just discovered a new indie band. The memes are the worst. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. Around the third season, the show bought into its own hype, and descended into exaggerated self parody as it went on. I know this isn't a popular opinion, and I'd love to be wrong, but I really think that Rick and Morty's best days are already behind it. --- Gameplay is a major part of video games, yes.
