chinese american student of mine was asking why she always had to call her older family members "uncle" or "auntie" even though they're not actually an aunt or uncle. i said its respect based on age. she looked puzzled. i asked if she ever heard of Confucius, and she had no idea.

so i had to explain how he was a famous scholar that basically outlined the basis for Chinese/Asian culture and he was really big on age.

Just because I have Mexican in me, doesn't mean I have to embrace Mexican culture. I hate Mexican food, and all of you probably know more Spanish than me. Don't even ask me what or when the Mexican holidays are, idk.

yeah. but i think people dont know their culture because the society they're in actively dissuades them from learning their own. like if you had the choice, okay, but a lot of these kids are told not to. i have a lot of mexican friends who said their grandparents made their parents only speak english around the kids so they could learn english only. so now theres lots of kids who were taught that their own language is inferior and english is superior, and that carries on to other things.

whether or not thats true is whatever. but the fact that they aren't given the option most times and its forced is what's sad.

im filipino. i dont speak tagalog. i can't talk to my family in the philippines. that's sad!
