So Barinten burned down Rafa and Malak's village because he wanted their power

The question is...why? Did he not know how shitty their skills are? He already had the ability to set things on fire, which is far better than anything those two can do

Maybe he wanted to ALSO have their power, in addition to setting things on fire. Start with small, easy stuff and build up to the cool stuff like ALLSWORD later on

That's because the key is to give Rafa a purse.

Well I meant more that often in games what's stated in the plot doesn't necessarily match things in the gameplay. Like in ME2 when Jack wrecks like 3 Atlas mechs in a cutscene but isn't remotely capable of such a thing in gameplay.

But Rafa and Malak don't do shit in the story. They claim to have awesome powers that this guy burned the village for, suited for assassination. But neither of them kills anyone. This is a game that isn't afraid to show bloodshed, you'd think they at least have Malak do something worse than explode a frog he took over

untruth is godawful, but if the village elder won't give you the kid who can inject his speech into a frog from a remote distance and then MAKE IT EXPLODE then you burn that place to ash and take that kid with you, dammit.

Every once in a while, their abilities could wreck shit. If you got really lucky and they hit multiple times.

But, no, they really weren't as good as most of the other unique units.

Actually, the reason he burned down the village was more like "If I can't have these skills (Elder won't teach him?) then no one can!" but then he was surprised when found Rafa & Malak in the ashes and decided to manipulate them.

This

Also let's be fair, if you need to assassinate someone that spends a lot of time standing on ground that is much higher or much lower than everything around it, they're actually fairly good. It's an esoteric niche but hey, might come in handy some day.

Theyre still teenagers right? Hypothetically they'd get better.

Or just pick a target for them that's surrounded by 4 height tiles on all sides and then truth is the truth.

Originally they would cast their spells 1 to 6 times which results in an average of 3.
in WotL they cast 1 to 10 times, resulting in an average of 5.

I didn't know that. That's pretty cool

I haven't spent a lot of time with the game, but I do remember those skills being terrible. I thought the idea was good, and if they've made them better, then that's great

They also significantly increased the odds of the spells hitting the center tile. So, at high end play, Rafa can actually get several high damage hits and potentially outdamage any other character. It's a bit of a gamble though.

Malak still sucks compared to his sister. She has naturally higher MA because she's a woman, she has access to female-only accessories, and her skillset ignores Faith, while his requires both his AND his target's Faith to be low to deal more damage. Also, having low Faith means he get a healed next to nothing by White Magick and buff spells are unlikely to hit him.

Not quite. Rafa's is the opposite of Malak's, high Faith increases damage instead of low Faith.
Malak's low Faith makes him resistant to Oracle/Mystic debuffs too.

Also, there are 2 status effects; "Faith" and "Innocent" (Names may be changed in WotL) that give you effectively 0 Faith or 100 Faith. But there was an overflow-like error, where these statuses affect Rafa and Malak the opposite way they should; IE if Rafa was "Innocent" (0 Faith) it would act like she had 100 Faith. Not sure if this was fixed in WotL.

Innocent can be hard to get, but there is a Faith Rod that gives the user auto-Faith.

Additionally worth noting, if a unit has too high of Faith (like 90s, except Ramza) they will leave your party. Similarly; low Brave in the teens or less. Low Brave is still a good idea though because of MoveFindItem/TreasureHunter.

Sorry, but you're mistaken. While Malak's Nether Mantra spells require low Faith on himself and his target to maximize his damage output, Rafa's Sky Mantra ignores Faith entirely. She's not the opposite of Malak. That's a misconception.

Normal Magick (from Blac Mages, Summoners, etc) requires high Faith on the caster and target. Nether Mantras require the opposites: low Faith. Sky Mantras ignore both.

Quite a misconception indeed. Upon checking the BMG, you're right. The rest of the info I posted is still true though, concerning Faith and Innocent and all that.
