If at all possible, I would strongly advise getting the fuck out of there. The models seem to be predicting a glancing blow to Miami, and then a straight shot up the eastern coast of Florida.

left miami, now in fort myers with some buddies which is on the west side of florida
place is a ghost town, took me an hour to fill my car back up (the pump was very slow). some poor guy overfilled his tank and had a bunch of gas on the floor and over his car door

A cat 5 isn't a joke but it's not hitting us directly and worrying so much about it isn't going to help. Florida is mostly up to regulations for hurricanes and if you have shelter and supplies just calm down and wait for it to be over.

have you checked for shelters in your neck of the wood, thankfully major cities are normally on the ball when times get rough so you should be able to find a sturdy enough one that you can go to in a pinch

No, just someone who lives in Florida and has the newscast acting like this pretty much every year. Getting super worked up over it is nonsense. If you have insurance, shelter, and food... what does getting crazy scared and worried about it accomplish?

But won't my house be unsafe to take shelter in? I live in Miami Dade County. Off NW 42nd st, like not far at all from the coast. I'm pretty sure they're evacuating us for a reason.

Also how much food would be enough? A weeks worth?

They're speculating it to go up the coast of FL, but even if that doesn't happen; South FL is the last place you want to be by SAT.

The only good news is it may go back down to a Cat 4 or 3 by then.

no but seriously, learn from harvey. Houston was told no need to evacuate and many lost their lives / were trapped. Better safe than sorry. Especially considering Miami's location, getting out of there would be the safest bet. If nothing happens to happen and it shifts course, at least you still made the wise decision

You know many died during Rita because of the evacuation right?

And many of the people dying during Harvey were because they were in their cars trying to flee during the hurricane...

yes, mass evacuations will have its consequences. But I think some of the casualties are due to people waiting too long until deciding to leave. People have been leaving south florida for days now, and there are still a few days to leave. An evacuation order has just been issued for much of Miami. I don't know if you are suggesting people try to wait it out, but that would be bad advice imo

Welp, TC, all the models are now in agreement that's going to slam straight through all of Florida (except the pandhandle which is going to get the edge) so we're in for quite the bumpy ride. As long as you've got the supplies ready, nothing else to do but wait it out wherever you are safest and hope for the best. I don't know how up to code your home is, but if it's 80s-90s or better and you have shutters or impact windows , you'll hopefully be fine unless a literal tornado touches down near you.
