My first house was $53k.
Somehow my second (and current) was $50K.

That I did. I lived with my parents for the first two years after finishing school. It did wonders for my finances and allowed me to pay off student loans while also buying the house without a mortgage (instead a smallish loan). Though I could've instead moved out earlier and pulled out a mortgage. You can get the money back that you put into the house and then some when you sell to upsize.
