I enjoy hyper realistic graphics as much as the next guy, but variety is needed in this industry. It's good we have some games that go for a stylised look over realism, what's the point of making games if you all want them to look the same? Homogenization is a terrible thing we should never strive for

Also I find it absolutely HILARIOUS that Pitchford hates the artstyle considering he stole it from Code Hunters

I am pretty sure the art style was one of the major things that made the game stand out among other shooters back when it first released. Damn near all my friends and my older brother didn't even know wtf borderlands was or cared when it was releasing, until I told them all that it was a cel-shaded first person shooter that was sort of like diablo, when I decided to blind buy it because of said cel-shaded art style.

There was so god damn many brown and grey gritty releastic shooters during that time period. Still is, actually, =/

Update: Since IGN’s publication of this interview clip, Randy Pitchford has taken to Twitter to defend Borderlands‘ art style, saying that it would be in place going forward for the next Borderlands. As proof, he referenced a GDC talk we reported on earlier this year and stated that the full IGN interview would provide more context to explain his statements.

Yeah, I was going to say that originally it was much more dark and grounded art style.

In fact, I remember some people were really put off when it became cel shaded.

Personally, I think the annoying characters and le reddit jokes are what holds it back, but that's just me. Also haven't played any of the games since the second one so maybe they moved past that.

They have the original quote from Pitchford up there and it's pretty much the exact opposite of what the original article implied.

He said it probably wouldn't have been as successful if not for it's art style.

He may have some doubts as to exactly how much the art style contributed to success, but he personally believes the art style was a positive and part of the reason Borderlands is a huge success.
