I'm obviously not counting the under budget stuff, not counting joke films or indie stuff.

I'm talking... it was actually worse than the Emoji Movie level bad. It was so devoid of most things, it's only called Death Note because the Death Note is in it.

Honestly, I didn't even like Ryuk. I like Willem Dafoe, but Ryuk is a lot more involved in the original. Even if we assume this is a different Light and L on the stateside rather than in Japan but possibly the same Ryuk, the original Light intrigued Ryuk in every way. What do the characters here do that makes Ryuk say humans are so interesting? It's unjustified, and Ryuk of the original would've gotten bored and abandoned this Light.

It's a beaten horse, but the Rotten Tomatoes score is too high.

You know, I actually liked the scream (better than original Light's reaction, I didn't enjoy the scream as itself). The original Light actually had way TOO little reaction to Ryuk. I know it's Japan, but comon

It's really bad.

That said, it was able to hold my attention for the whole runtime (even if the reason why was it's so stupid that I couldn't turn away), so it has more value to me than other movies from this year that were straight up boring.

I like the line "if you were paying attention to this movie, you will be punished." I actually didn't mind a lot of the portion of the movie where I left to cook something up and was watching halfheartedly on a smaller screen.

is it true that Light refers to himself as the villain? I heard that. that's so out of character for him, if it's true

I probably missed the part where he says it, but the overall tone of the movie seems to suggest he's playing the villain.

There's absolutely no messiah imagery in this entire movie, and movie Light himself is not egotistical more than he is a scared pushover

IIRC, Light believed that killing the FBI agents made Kira evil, since he wasn't just killing criminals.

He's honestly really spot on, and even talks about stuff I don't remember from halfheartedly watching. Now I'm glad I didn't pay that much attention.

I haven't even seen the Emoji Movie and I know it was better than live action Death Note 2017.

Ok yeah that was an obvious exaggeration. But for me who liked the anime, it was offensive. I knew what the Emoji Movie was trying to do, and I was offended that Sir Patrick Stewert, the God Himself, was forced to take part in it, but his lines weren't the worst part of the movie. I pretty love any scene that this guy's in, so that helped.

Personally though, I simply hated the Death Note movie more, also because I thought maybe this is the one. Now I know to never have that expectation. Thanks Death Note (2017)

nah, Ryuk in this version was more involved, and I didn't like it.

original Ryuk was an amoral being, that was just looking for something to interest him, and he found that in Light.

this Ryuk is malevolent, and he basically goads Light into killing, and there's some kinda implicit threat of danger for Light

Nope, my headcanon is that he was probably threatened somehow. I actually love him in American Dad. I don't remember him much from Family Guy though, outside the kinda actually really funny Star Trek: TNG convention episode

Patrick Stewart will pick any role if it's hilarious enough. His character in American Dad basically confirms that.

I couldn't get pass the 1st half hour, I went into the movie optimistic cause I heard it got great reviews.

The movie was certified trash the moment I saw lights reaction to ryuk. Fucking clown acting, I was done with the movie after that.

Abortion of a adaptation.

I didn't mind the movie, it was trying it's own thing and I would rather have that than a rehash of the series (which the original Japanese live action movies basically were). Granted it played a bit too fast and loose with the notebook rules but it would be boring as hell to watch the same old "Light is a sociopath but charismatic and L is awkward but well meaning" dynamic. I wouldn't hail the new film as an incredible movie but I enjoyed it and hope they expand on it.

Except the writers here didn't know how to write the L vs Light dynamic, and it came across more like a cop and robber situation more than a battle between 2 bright minds. Light couldn't even hold a candle to Mia who wasn't exactly particularly cunning either, just psychotic. L himself was a disgrace. He was far too emotional and gave actually 0 reason for any of his deduction. He used the Disney afternoon special movie excuse of "I figured it out, just believe it." And at the end of it all, it's really about a movie with 3 exactly the same character with slightly varying degree of psychotic and emotional, and the wimpiest one of them come out on top for no reason.

If it were a Disney special, I would have a suspension of belief. But this was filmed like some dark suspenseful thriller, and it's just too goofy and not clever for it

I agree it did not pull of the dynamic as well but I liked seeing a different interpretation for the characters. It was nice to see Light not instantly being a ruthless killing machine who thinks he's God or L being the "can do no wrong" secret weapon of the police. From my interpretation L wasn't given the time or resources after his first failed attempt to take down Light hence he becomes a bit of a laughing stock to the police and lost most of his backing followed by the death of his mentor/friend leading him to flip out.

But yeah despite liking it there were a fair deal of problems. Ryuk was interesting in some ways, especially the warning about him, but the implication he did the killings was kind of stupid. Not to mention almost the entire Watari section making little to no sense but being a major driving point of the story.

I might like to see the anime L sink that low just to see how he would've dealt with it. But L in the movie is just too fallible. We have no reason to give him significance when he does lose all the trust and allies because we end up thinking it's him that goofed up, rather than Light outsmarting him. We already assume he's just gonna take it poorly and is ultimately unable to climb back up... which is exactly what happens.

I guess my main point amongst everything is, keep the different dynamic. But make every character just a few levels smarter

*Mild shocked face* goes about explaining why he somewhat expected Ryuk mostly due to the existence of the Death Note and the fact that there were rules written there that humans couldn't have figured out without causing a commotion. It was actually fairly reasonable.
