How screwed would the US economy get? Imagine if it was an average sized storm with 155 mile per hour winds, and the storm moved at a moderate pace. Would the US ever recover from that?

This is looking more and more possible every year. Ocean temperatures are only going up.

The effects would be short-term. If a hurricane of that size hit New York, it would be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

The real natural phenomenon that would cripple the US is when New Madrid goes off again. It is by Illinois and no buildings in the surrounding states are equipped for earthqakes. Many are brick.

It'll be about a hundred or two years or more before climate bands shift enough for this to be feasible, and it may not be possible at all, given how the gulf stream works.
