How screwed would the US economy get? Imagine if it was an average sized storm with 155 mile per hour winds, and the storm moved at a moderate pace. Would the US ever recover from that?

I dunno man but it would be one devil of a mess. NYC doesn't have land area that Houston has and look at how fucked they are right now.

The effects would be short-term. If a hurricane of that size hit New York, it would be a once-in-a-lifetime event.
The real natural phenomenon that would cripple the US is when New Madrid goes off again. It is by Illinois and no buildings in the surrounding states are equipped for earthqakes. Many are brick. ... Copied to Clipboard!

It'll be about a hundred or two years or more before climate bands shift enough for this to be feasible, and it may not be possible at all, given how the gulf stream works.
