it's a distant third behind league and dota, which is kinda funny since everything about blizzard pre-release hype suggests they thought it'd be a runaway first place

incredibly fun and takes the grindy aspect out of mobas.

the hero variety alone makes it just tons of fun. playing as tracer or d.va in moba-form is hilarious.

their punitive economic model sucks and given that so many people have sunk so much money into LOL they don't want to leave because they'd have to repeat that all over again.

Dota 2 got to success by making all the characters free.

Smite also has a lot of success because it's extremely cheap. $30 buys you all current and future characters.

Great game ruined by awful players

Reinstalled it recently and the first game I played, my teammates chose to destroy every building except the core. Wipe the enemy team, first thing to do? DON'T HIT THE CORE! Everything else, but not the core

It's so frustrating

it's really really casual so it's a decent time killer with no stress

if you were winning does it really matter since grinding for buildings etc. is what affects post-game gold and exp gain?

This is my problem with it too. There's literally nothing you can do by yourself in this game, your individual impact even in a game far below your skill level will still be relatively low and easily thrown. It makes me question why there's a ranked queue at all.

We were losing the entire game and finally wiped the enemy team, the core was exposed and we could have ended it there, but my teammates chose not to and seem to prefer losing ranked match points.

I just had a game where my team was two supports and three laners, and the enemy team was balanced.

Also no. Dota 2 got its success because of ice frog and his ability to balance and everything his name means for all his work on Dota 1. All heroes free is undeniably an advantage that has increased the player base, but it's still less popular by a wide margin to league.

This. I don't think it's flawless (the sheer emphasis on teamwork and inability to truly carry means random queuing is an exercise in insanity), but it's the only one that I've found basically fun enough to keep playing.

It's more fun when you've got friends so you can guarantee your teammates aren't idiots.

Admittedly, I *do* play another MOBA in the form of Smite.

As much as League and Dota brought about the genre and continue to be the flagship titles of it, I find the MOBAs I tolerate and enjoy the most are the ones that don't play "traditionally" as it were. I mean, sure, Smite *can* be played like a typical MOBA in certain modes, but then I rarely play those modes for that exact reason.
