I doubt they paid for the lawyers. The article says the lawsuit was filed by a charity, I'd assume the charity covered the legal costs.

10k seems a little low considering there came a courtcase out of it that probably has costs associated with it. 35k and the clerks jailed forever with no chance of parole would have been fair.

The funny thing is that by his own logic, the clerks should not be in that position. They knew that this would happen, they knew that gay people would start coming in for marriage licenses. They could have chosen a different profession but no, they had to go to the one where they knew they would have to face something that is against their religious beliefs.
