or more likely he never would have fought her one on one in the first place because remember the initial plan was to have zuko and katara fight her together because zuko didnt think he could beat her alone.

Ya, idk about her taking on Azula. Azula was not only one of the most skilled fire benfmders, but even without it she was creative and skilled and cunning.

They stood a chance only because she all of a sudden had a mental breakdown.

I don't understand this line of reasoning. She very clearly was becoming more unhinged throughout the final season as she kept banishing everyone, leaving her even more alone, which led to her becoming even more unhinged, etc. which led to her poor performance in battle.

Agreed. Katara did shit with waterbending that no one else could. I have no problem believing she could beat Azula at her peak.

Like a sane Azula wouldnt stick around an area that Katara could use to help herself. Azula has shown she will play dirty far in advanced to win.

I don't think Azula would have fallen for the trick Katara used to beat her if she had been calmer. Azula's throwing way too much fire power for Katara to win a prolonged fight. All she has to do is to screw up once and Azula wins. A calmer Azula takes Zuko hostage and captures the two of them (I was thinking she drives Katara off, but I don't think Katara would abandon Zuko)

The rest of the assaults go basically the same, so Ozai loses his bending, and the fire nation's fleet is wrecked. Azula uses her prisoners to force Aang off her back and becomes Fire Lord. Aang, Toph and Sokka spend season four searching for the two of them while Azula deals with becoming Fire Lord.

you do realize katara fought evenly with azula in the season 2 finale right?
by season 3 katara could have beaten a sane azula. the comet power boost was the main issue

Beating a mentally unstable person =/= beating a stable minded person.

Azula didnt fight at all like her normal sane self.

Like seriously. Azula was in a class of her own, she was like a Mary Stu. She continuously clowned everyone even when the odds were against her. Even when she backed in a corner she somehow still prevails.

The one fight she fails to clown people she had has a mental collapse fighting nothing like she does sane. Her mental state was on the decline ever since her friends betrayed her.

I wonder how Azula and Toph would matchup. They never actually fought each other during the series.
