If you never try your hand at anything, you will always be mediocre. Not good or bad at anything, because you never do anything outside your comfort zone. If you do try something you might find you suck bad at it, but now you've learned something useful about yourself.

Alternatively, it's suggesting that it's better to be a bad person and great in some respects (e.g. Mark Zuckerberg) than it is to be someone who is ordinary.

I meant in terms of quality, not performance. People say enduring something mediocre is less enjoyable than something outright bad.

i don't think schrodinger's cat applies to new skills

just because i've never tried something doesn't mean i couldn't be terrible at it on my first try

wouldn't such a person be good at things in their comfort zone?

i feel as though it would need to make comment on positive qualities to suggest this

imo if i have to sarah huckabee sanders a quotation it's not a very good one

Eh, sounds kinda silly. I guess maybe they're saying that bad is an experience worth remembering, whereas mediocrity is forgettable.

Being mediocre in that you are neither great or terrible so you do not stand out. At least when you are bad you are noticed and there is the possibility of someone more experienced teaching you. If you are great at something people will notice because you are great at it.

The Green Lantern movie is an example of this tbh. A bad movie can be unintentionally funny. A mediocre one is just a pain to sit through.

But if you never try you will never know. What's that Wayne Gretzky quote that eye-roll worthy instagram gym girls like to set to pictures of sunsets..."you miss 100% of the shots you don't take"

not knowing is not being mediocre

i agree with the sentiment i just dont think the quote could possibly relate to this

they'd know what being mediocre/bad at the things in their comfort zone is like because they'd see people sucking at those things

like that time i played twilight struggle with a new player.

Depends on the subject and the context.

For example, a lot of things are just SO GOD DAMN BAD that they are actualy really entertaining. See Ed Woods' movies or games like Superman 64 or Daikatana. This horseshoes right around and makes them interesting and fun due to their monumental flaws.

Where as a game, movie or piece of that is just "ok", compotently made, nothing to complain about but nothing fun either is just so utterly forgetable and boring that it doesn't stick with you.

For example, possibly the most dull uninteresting game I have ever played in my life is Ninety-Nine Nights. Now there is really nothing wrong with Ninety-Nine Nights, but that's the problem. There's nothing right with it either. The music is medicore, the gameplay is generic, there is no challenge but it's not piss easy either, I found no fun glitches, it's just a blackhole of fun and ideas and imagination.

Now this game is technically several hundred times superior to games like Ride to Hell 1% or Big Rigs Over The Road Racing or Silent Hill 4 or Mortal Kombat Special Forces. But yet despite that, its so utterly uncaptivating that it's less fun to play.

I never want to play Ninety-Nine Nights again in my life but I'd gladly play MK Special Forces.

Being medicore is the last thing you want. Medicore things don't last, they don't create memories or communities, they don't make you bank. Meanwhile terrible things CAN be as fun and memorable as great things.

Seriously, check out the AVGN of Plumbers Don't Wear Ties and then come back and tell me Madden 2010 is more fun.

Why does mediocrity inspire anger and disgust, though? Badness should inspire those, mediocrity should inspire disregard.

because mediocrity suggests someone that doesn't care and contributes nothing. If you're a bad example atleast you can show people what NOT to do. You can't be mad at someone for trying.

This.

You even see this with media.

People remember great games and films because of their high quality.
People remember bad games and films because of their notoriety.

Mediocre games and films--stuff that are not bad but not good either, just "so-so"--tend to get forgotten.
